550ml cork & cage bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours black in color with a one-finger foamy khaki head that reduces to leave nothing behind
S- predominately charred malt and dark chocolate up front. As it warms, plenty of barrel emerges, adding wet oak, bourbon, caramel & vanilla. Dark fruit notes of fig, raisin and prune emerge. Not picking up any oxidation yet
T- opens with that signature roasty charred note from the base beer, adding dark chocolate and a hint of anise. Mid-palate adds the barrel, with barrel juice, oak, caramel and vanilla bean emerging. The finish is slightly dry with more charred malt and chocolate lingering with the barrel
M- medium body with virtually zero carbonation leads to a slick mouthfeel that turns just slightly foamy at the warming finish
O- after reading recent reviews, I didn't have high hopes for this one. But other than losing it's carbonation, it's still a solid beer. Worthy of noting; this bottle has been in my cold dark basement since it was released.

Sadly past its sell-by date. I still have a XX that I'm hoping is better.

Bottle pour from a friend's cellar stash - dark as night with no head and a ring of tiny bubbles. Slightly oxidized for sure. Much better fresh.Nose and taste are muted roasty malt and barrel wood. Finish is flat and dry with lingering barrel wood.
This example didn't age well.

Vanilla, roasted malt, milk chocolate, cola and oak. Smooth. Slightly oxidized. Finishes dry. Should drink this guy sooner rather than later. Better fresh imo.
