Strong Scottish Ales are known for their high alcohol and BIG caramel maltiness; Big Mother does not disappoint. Big Mother is brewed with imported English Pale Malt for the big base, with four different kinds of crystal malt used to enhance the caramel sweetness and beautiful brown hues. Dextrin malt and it's unfermentable sugar, is used to increase sweetness of the beer. This brew goes great with juicy, roasted meats, and most items off the grill.

Named for its big flavor and high level of alcohol, Big Mother is also a tribute to the search and rescue efforts of Navy chopper pilots during the Vietnam War, including local hero Neil Sparks, winner of the Navy Cross.

This recipe was brewed in collaboration with John Collier. This is John's second time winning the Hog Haus Homebrew Competition.

Growler, Boulevard tulip. This brew now has more than a year on it. I had heard that they saved some kegs of this and I got lucky.

This is an opaque Wee Heavy, but not black, it's very dark autumnal brown. For a year old and a growler, the head pretty much a whole pass. Initially there is a nice little tan cap, but soon only a fingernail ring of tan around the glass and a vigorous swirl doesn't rouse much more.

The aroma is lovely and quite smokey. Good firewood smoke and ash with rich fruity maltiness. Caramelized sugar and alcohol.

Applewood smoke, caramelized sugar, demerara sugar, dates, bitter rich alcohol, slight oxidation, weak coffee, and campfire ash. There is so much here. Without the smoke it wouldn't be nearly as complex. This is maltiness at its best.

Only the slightest tickle alerts you to the presence of carbonation, but the body of this thing stands up. Thick, viscous, slippery.

I'm so glad I finally got to try this by stumbling across one of the aged kegs. The alcohol is craftily integrated and the flavors are genuinely complex.

Let me preface this by saying this is the best beer I've ever had from these guys & it needs to get in the rotation! This was the winner from the annual homebrew competition. This also a tribute to Navy Search & Rescue pilots from the Vietnam War. Jon Collier has won this competition twice & hopefully this guy gets to the next level (hopefully around here!) 29 IBUs

Pours chestnut with a finger of tan head. A trace of head retention & lacing

S: Caramel & toffee, plus hints of smoke

T: Caramel, a bit of maple syrup, toffee & smoke up front. Dryness, caramel, leafy hops & smoked figs as this warms. Finishes fruitty (raisins & figs) with much caramel, toffee, dryness & just a kiss of booze

MF: Chewy as can be, low carbonation, dry. Nice stickeyness too

Great drikability, so yummy & malty treat this one with respect if you are lucky enough to find. A malt head's wet dream!!
