Tasted by a half pint at the Swim Inn, a JDW pub on West Street, Sheffield, on 16/04/2007. Served by a sparkler-fitted hand pump.
A: bright reddish dark amber in colour, almost like a brandy; creamy and tight pale beige head sustains well, on top of rather low carbonation.
S: nuttiness upfront, showing a rather low, yet deepening, profile a swirl brings out green apples aromatic tart edge, berry fruits (e.g. raspberries), and a faint trace of flowery fragrance.
T: crystal malts, spirit/rum-soaked raisins, and the bitter edge of walnuts combine beautifully; a light touch of citrus reveals in the hop mixture, and the bitter element gradually deepens and cuts its way deep down the palate, showing a chewy, tannic edge and backed by the lingering walnutty malt undertone.
M&D: softly carbonated and med-bodied, this is a beautifully-balanced fruity premium bitter served from a very fresh cask. Extremely quaffable IMO!
