Fitger's Brewhouse XXX English Ale. 6% ABV (I think.) Extra Special/Strong Bitter Ale. All English hops and malt in this, or so I hear.

got this one fresh off the tap this morning, once the pub opened. I brought with me to Duluth 3 glass growlers and one nalgene plastic "adventure" growler, that someone got for me many years ago, and once held (according to the sticker on the cap) "IPA." Took all for of them to the BrewHouse Beer store, only to be told that they couldn't swap out the plastic nalgene growler, I'd have to get it filled upstairs at the pub. Walked along the lakeshore until Fitger's opened and here we have it, and I'm going to get to it.

Appearance: Clear, with coppery/bronze coloration, half inch of of off-white head.

Aromatics: lightly sweet and malty, a little floral and fruity, showing restraint from hops, pleasantly placid.

Taste: All malt flavors at play here, just a little grainy, a touch sweet, and ever-so-slightly fruity. Toasty, with caramel and toffee malt flavors, and just the slightest edge of bitterness. Touch of roasted malt. Malty flavors keep getting rich and deeper as we drink up, and I like it more and more. Earthy, nutty, with just enough caramel malt sweetness and just enough bitter hops to offset it.

Denser and richer than a typical ESB. That means I like it. I still haven't started liking bitters and ESB, not significantly. Oh, they're okay, but I can never really LIKE-like them, you know.

This 64-ounce vessel will pass the liquid through my innards with the greatest of ease!

purged with c02 growler picked up about a week ago.
Pours a brownish dark copper. White head of about 2 inches, frothy lace spotting the glass, leaving a modest white cap.
Can you say malt bomb?
toasty malts, semi sweet grains, tart earthy hops, smooth clean mouthfeel.
Mildly creamy with a snipit of carbonation tickle.
Earthy bittering hops across the finish lingering with roasty grains.
Solid sessioner.

Described as an amped-up ESB by the bartender, the beer is bronze with a thick beige head. It has really nice lacing. The beer has a muted aroma of caramel malts and floral hops.

The taste is a nice combo of slightly sweet caramel malts and guessing Golding hops that add restrained bitterness and floral notes.

The mouth is smooth, slightly oily and has nice low carbonation.

I liked this one and thought it would be a good session beer. A slight uptick in the aroma would be appreciated.

Picked up 6/18 from brewhouse

A - rich brown rust color and small head that disappears quickly. reminds me of what a 'double esb' should be...this is what the description is

S - burnt caramel and roast malts. no hop in the nose

T - more burnt malts and a bit of an alcohol aftertaste which is surprising for a 6% beer. a touch of bitter hop in the aftertaste.

M - nice rich mouth with low carbonation. this is by far the strong point of the beer

D - pretty easy going down with the low alcohol and bitterness

Overall ok. I'm a bit disapointed on this one as I really enjoyed my visit to fitgers and most of their beers.

Originally reviewed May 19, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. Clear deep orange and brown pour, topped with a pancake batter bubbly deep ivory head. Light woody and sweet aroma. Very oaky flavors, combined with a nice dose of somewhat mellowed, but very prevalent hops. A very kicked up ESB. Super sweet and chock full o’ nuts. All backed with a nice floral and lemon overtone. Aftertaste is composed of strong dry, yet rich, oak and good hop sugars. Well rounded combination of the two; sweet malt and aromatic hops. Palate is dry, after a bout of sweetness, before finishing with a satidfying toasted almond and fresh cake aftertaste. A little buttery, with some diacteys showing through. Overall, a very respectable ESB.

This is like a tough, heavy ESB. It is a dark amber, slightly cloudy. Average head. Smell is very malty as is the taste. Deeper camely/toffee malt, deeper than a typical ESB, hence the XXX I guess. Dry apple and banana undertones. Definitly a malt dominated brew, but pretty hoppy like a strong PA.

Not sure if this is classified right:

Here is the description from the brewery:"A big brother to ESB this amber ale is rich and malty with very nice balance. All English hops and malt."

Pours a gold/brown color...nose leans malty...toasted toffee..a little bit of caramel as well.

Taste features more hops than the nose would lead you to believe...still a toasted toffee/caramel component but also some mineral/metallic like characteristics..also a very slight dark cocoa note...hops are slightly astringent and raw and rough...

Finishes dry...

Nice brew with a little more weight than your basic ESB..Worth trying for sure.
