The mix of spices in this beer blend perfectly with the malt and hops, making it a brew that has a distinct and forward pumpkin pie taste that yet never becomes overbearing or gimmicky. It's a pumpkin ale in which the pumpkin tastes and the ale tastes share twin billing; this is a nice relief from beers which either taste like pumpkin malternatives or that taste like regular ales with a little pumpkin flavoring chucked in as an afterthought.
The bartender told me that there were lots of real pumpkins used in the brew, but I don't know how much of the actual pumpkin taste, as opposed to the spice taste, makes its way into the beer. Regardless, the beer just jumped with flavors while showing enough of the brewer's control and craft to remain very drinkable.
