Presentation: Sampled during an organized Brewery Visit to Brasserie Mortals Beers on Sunday 16th April, 2006. Served from the tap (but also available in bottles) in the adjoining Bar and Restaurant which opens to the public once a week on Sundays 11am 9pm.
Black Mortal The original brew, filtered over oak bark. 8.0% ABV.
Appearance: Well its not black, that stands out for a start. Bleached white head rides easily above the dark amber body. Clear dark chestnut has a little detritus in it, feint speckles that could be mistaken for small bubbles. Rising carbonation is feisty. Head relaxes quickly but leaves some lacing. Average looks but fair enough.
Nose: Caramel, dark-ish malts, spices and a faded rain soaked forest. Woody traits. Hints of butter and the dreaded D in this one.
Taste: Candy sugar rides the malt wave right into the middle. No sign of the off-putting buttery nose anywhere in the tastes, thankfully. Malty profile with a spice-ridden finish. Ending has a dark cooking chocolate bitterness that seems a little unbalanced. Bitter-sweet malts in the lingering death. Amateurish but fair enough.
Mouthfeel: Powdery texture with a dusty feel after the swallow. Malts with some dry bitterness form an unhealthy partnership. Thin, again.
Drinkability: Difficult to get excited about this one, too many annoying niggling bits to ignore. So-so, at best.
Overall: My notes simply state Its got wood, but doesnt give it Another one of the Mortal brews that was an overall miss for my money.

No freshness date. White head, not overwelming and a amberbrown beer that's quiet clear. Nose is very spicy, caramellic, dark candy, overal very sweetfruity and fresh. Taste is sweet malty, caramellic dark candy, cinnamon but altogether spicy and in aftertaste having moderate bitterness. Yes an enjoyable beer from mortal of witch most brews IMO are good. Fine carbonisation with it and balanced full mouthfeel. Well drinkable an IMO well worth a try.
