Sampled & reviewed on 10/27/06:

Ap: Deep nut brown. Very thin head when poured & it dissipated almost immediately. Carbonation seems a bit low to style. Used to more carbonation in wheat based beers....

Ar: Yeasty wheat aromas with hints of chocolate noted. The chocolate seems a bit out of place. A bit smoky too. Slight alcohol noticeable.

Ta: Rich, roasty flavor with wheaty, yeasty, malty middle. A slight burnt flavor mixed in too..almost smoky. Close to a rauchbier's flavor in ways. The alcohol noted in the aroma not detectable in the flavor.

Mo: Chewy & rich. Medium to full bodied. Crisp with good carbonation which was surprising as it looked lightly carbonated when poured. Finishes clean.

Dr: A sipper. Refreshing but very rich & filling.

Comments: Nice & flavorful. The richness would lend this to be a good one to share with friends....

Poured a deep chesnut brown with a slight off white one finger head that left pretty quickly,big bubble gum and molasses aromas along with some earth and clovey spice just a light touch of unsweetened chocolate as well.I noticed a sweeter molasses-like sweetness upon first sips fading into a banana flavor and somewhat spicey/clovey finish all over top of a light cocoa background.Just a solid weizenbock it wont blow you away but it delivers all the good flavors a good weizenbock should have,recommended.

22oz brown bomber, no freshness date. Pours a muddy dark brown, near opaque, with leathery reddish-amber hues around the edges. Beige head is thick, tight and creamy with plenty of sticky lacing. (There's floaty goodness in this one, so leave a 1/2 an inch in the bottle and give it a swirl, and then pour it into your glass.)

Distinct clove phenols in the nose, all-spice, fruity bananas esters ... that are all wrapped in with some toasty husk aromas. Smells similar to a typical "Hefe," but much more rich with malty goodness. Appealing.

Very creamy and smooth on the palate, with a silky and even medium-body. Malty sweet bread-like profile that's quite toasty ... followed by a slightly raw and tart ("green") under-ripened banana flavor and a very spicy clove flavor that nearly over-dominates the palate, but doesn't. Yeasty. More all-spice. Hints of chocolate, some wheaty/husky/tannin characters, and suggestions of smoke beneath. Citric edge (almost milky/lactic at times) helps to balance things out. Major fruity banana esters (candy-like almost) and a more pronounced alcohol emerges as the beer warms. Slightly drying in the finish.

Man, I dig Weizenbocks. You just don't find too many of them. Thankfully Otter Creek's interpretation follows through true to style (wouldn't expect anything else from Steve Parkes & crew), and then goes a step further to ensure it's uniquely theirs, which a I really dig.

Great style. Great name. Great label. Great beer.

22 oz brown bomber with no freshness date to be found.

A- Dark leather brown color, hints of garnet on the edges. Semi-fizzy lace ... head retention struggles.

S- Clove, big-time fruit cake or fresh Christmas pudding aroma. Overtones of dark and wheat malt in the nose as well.

T&M- A bit crisp and smooth but more creamy in the full body. Very malty, lots of wheat twang here ... clove sharpness fades quickly. Beefy? Black pepper? Dry maltiness with a warming solvent alcohol character, alcohol is almost too much for me.

D- I sipped this for a bit, the rest went to a marinade for a T-bone steak. Decent, just not my mug of beer.

Large bottle, no freshness indication. The label does include a generous German beer primer. This one pours a hearty shade of dark brown, cloudy/murky, with a fairly loose dark tan head, with early voluminous growth, then decent retention before the inevitable decline to the well respected tiny bubble film. Upon a gentle swirl the lacing is scattered and fairly minor. The nose here is chock full of bananas, malted chocolate milk and cocoa. This is a pretty full bodied brew, with notes of bananas, chocolate, malted milk, cloves, and a spicy smokiness. Nice, tasty, complex, silky smooth brew. BBQ ribs anyone? Go get some of this and enjoy!

Clear dark copper colored with some ruddy highlights where light comes through. Four fingers of thick tightly bubbled foam that slowly recedes, leaving no lacing.

Low but rich aroma of dark malt and ripe fruit, some toffee and cinnamon.

Subtle flavor of rich dark malt, sweet without being cloying. Flavors of brown sugar, caramel, overripe fruit. ABV does not detract.

Full and round mouthfeel, creamy and satisfying. Very tasty beer, very drinkable.

Otter Creek- Otterbahn

Appearance- dark ruby red bordering mahogany brown with a thick head. Slight lacing and the head holds up nicely.
Smell- Dark roasted malt. Dried fruits (prune, raisin, date, fig, cherry)
Taste- prune, fig, and raisin immediately hit the palette followed with a dark roasted coffe bean and finishing off with a light hefe flavor.
Mouthfeel- smooth and warming. Sligh lcohol presence noted.

Overall- A nice evening with a meal beer or a even better cool night drinking beer. I'm drinking it on a hot afternoon, not the best time. Pretty damn good beer!!

Foggy dark mahogany and light tan head. The head is small and fleeting. Only a ring remains above the brew. Nose is packed with yummy malts, definite clove, smokey chocolate, banana, apple, nuts, gum, and its pleasantly phenolic. Very sniff friendly. Taste is malty as well. Spice and tobacco, banana, phenols, rosted coffee and chocolate among other things. Mouthfeel is very silky smooth and thickens the medium, soft to moderately carbonated body. Quite drinkale too.

Solid brew with a nice German Otter on the label.

This pours a dark brown with a small head with little retention. The smell is a roasty malt clove aroma thats not bad,but alittle light. The taste is somewhat mettalic with chocolate, banana, and a roasted malt flavor. The m/f is light with almost no hint of a high alcohol beer, but the flavors don't mix all that well. This is an OK beer, but I would look at other weizenbocks before picking this up again.

Otterbahn pours a cloudy, very deep mahogany body beneath a short head of creamy almond-tan foam. The head retention is fairly good, and it leaves some decent lacing about the glass; although both should be better given the style.

The nose is malty and phenolic with some light cocoa, darker mik chocolate, wet clove, and bubblegum - as well as some apple and green banana.

In the mouth its medium body is delicately carbonated and very nicely creamy.

The flavor offers a nice edge of roastiness, and the yeasty phenolics can make that seem almost smoky when it's first poured. From there it warms to become more toasty, and caramelish with a drop of molasses added, but it still has a cocoa powder note to it. The spicy phenolics come out, and it's more than just clove-ish, there are notes of all-spice (and perhaps something else) in there as well. It's also fruity and candyish (mostly phenolic clove-driven. It's rich but not complex. A solid bitterness balances it, as does a touch of underlying alcohol, and it finishes dry with a touch of phenolic and a kiss of spicy hops.

22oz bomber, obtained as an extra in a trade, i believe from brewfan

appearance: pours into a wide mouth wine glass...very much a cola-esque body...light beige cream head with no retention/lacing to speak of...light garnet tint to the muddy mahogany body

smell: syrupy aroma, raisin/prune and other dried fruits, maple, light vanilla, thick malt structure, chocolate, caramel, earthy peat

taste: chocolate covered cherry, thick syrupy malt, a touch woody, big roasty flavours, raisin/prune/date, spiced dry fruit, a touch boozy, earthy characteristics...flavour certainly improves as it warms. Thick and chewy with a touch of smoke and char

mouthfeel: thick/chewy, moderate booze

Bought a big bomber of this stuff off the recommendation of a local shop keep;
It poured almost black into my glass. No appreciable head, just some tan lacing. What immediately hits you is the big, roasted black caramel maltiness. What is really nice is that there is just enough flavoring bitterness that it is all balanced. On the edges is a hint- a faint representation of sweetness but it never goes too far.
I would expect that the style would appear less carbonated but here is where my criticism starts; the beer seemed almost flat; This made the mouthfeel awkward and thinner than it needed to be, which is a shame because the taste was excellent.

Originally reviewed on May 22, 2006. Julios Spring Beer Festival. Clouded puddle of brown pour, rimmed with tan. Light barnyard aroma, with a touch of toast. Warm nutty flavor with some off touches of corn. The character is decent and acceptable, with good caramelized sugars and wheats, but the depth just isn’t entirely there. It’s fairly well balanced, with a touch of drying parchness on the backend. But, overall it could use a little more. Some thiness. Alcohol does glow and warm the nose, but it didn’t seem to carry much flavor. Finishes with a little dark fruit, and a hint of blackberry.

Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head that dissipated fairly quick and did not leave much lacing. The smell is of chocolate and carob, no wheat characteristics. The taste is of red wine and chocolate, light carob, has a noticable alcohol presence. Definitely way more on the bock side than weizen side. The feel is light and almost watery, finishes a bit on the sweet side. An average brew, not something I will seek out again.

Dark brown in color, thick head fades fast and leave a very thin lace. Wheat hits the nose, hints of bananas and cloves visit the journey. I pick up a small hint of something sweet but can’t put my finger on it…caramel perhaps? Taste is almost a shadow of the aroma but with a slight dry, crisp finish.

I enjoyed this beer. It has a nice all around balance of flavors and paired up nicely with some wurst that I grilled. It also went well with the second bottle solo. Not too much experience with this style but I enjoyed this one…try it if you find it.

Poured from a bomber to my new DSB blinky glass, DSB rocks BTW, the liquid is dark brown with good carbonation. The head is nice 2 fingers tan with just a bit of good lace.

The smell is of dark fruit and roasty goodness.

The taste is very nice I really like the roasty twist of this brew in the style. Flavors of chocolate and roasted nuts are just great as well as the dried dark fruits.

The mouthfeel is medium body and milder carbonation.

The drikability is very good I really enjoyed this, I wounder if more cellaring would have been better of not. Prosit, MK

Sampled on tap at American Flatbread in Burlington.

Appearance: Murky and sludgy brown with an off-grey head. Not much to look at, but this is a Weizenbock so it's to be expected.

Smell: Lots of Banana and creamy, wheaty aromas. The yeast was really put to good use in this one, it really shines through in the nose.

Taste: Chocolate milk spiced with cinnamon, roasted, peaty touches, great yeasty flavors and a solid, full-flavored malt backbone. I really love this style of Beer and this one didn't dissapoint at all, it went fabulously with the salad with sesame dressing I had at American Flatbread.

This offering from Otter Creek pours a dark plum with a lite maroon bottom that leaves a thin tan head that disappears quickly. The aroma is sweet dark fruits, plum and figs, banana,caramel, fresh herbs, and nutmeg. The taste starts much like the nose sweet caramel, dark malt, wheat, lemon, banana that has a refreshing burst of carbonation that is followed by a bready syrup mouthfeel that has bit of alcohal in the finish. This is a fantstic brew, glad I punched a ticket for the Otter Creek World Tour.

This is a pint glass of Otter Creek's new weizenbock. It is served chilled.

Appearance: The ale has a deep brown color that is accentuated by a steady turbid haze throughout the ale. There is a light ring of head that does not last long.

Smell: The clovey aroma of a weizen emerges from the brew, as does a strong wheat malt aroma and a bit of alcohol.

Taste: The weizen flavor is evident, but it is kicked up a notch (sorry, Emeril). The wheat flavors are more pronounced while the traditional weizen flavors are somewhat restrained.

Mouthfeel: A stronger weizen, perfect for a hot day as the bananas and cloves and higher abv lull you to sleep.

Drinkability: Drinkable enough, this would not be my first choice from the weizenbocks.

If you purchase beer by "taste units," this was a steal--even in a rather expensive, large bottle. I haven't tried a German Weizenbock, so I can't say whether this is typical of the style, but the craft-brewed versions I've tried are definitely unique. Extremely dark (black?) color in the glass with a decent head; roasted malt in the nose. The taste is extremely rich, dark (think midnight bittersweet chocolate coffee) with a pleasantly (though slightly) bitter aftertaste. I sipped. Just a bit too much for my acolyte palate to take in all at once--or maybe it was the slightly higher ABV. No matter, I enjoyed it immensely; and had some left to share out of the big bottle. Excellent. I really like Otter Creek brews. This one is step above--even for them.

Deep foggy mahoghany with a short-lived bubbly head. Smells pretty nutty to me, initially kinda like peanut butter followed by phenolics...very dark and chocolatey. Flavor is pretty rich...more toasty, nutty, chocolatey characteristics along with a slight citric tartness. The phenolics blend in well with the smokey, sweet malts and a little wheat. Nice creamy-smooth mouthfeel is fairly full.

Nothing amazing but, its still a tasty interpretation and I'm glad it survived the trip from Mass.

Pours a nice dark brown colour with a mid-range sized tan head that leaves a decent amount of residue on the glass.

The aroma is of dark berries, chocolate, wheat, earthy malt and some spicy sweetness.

Flavour is a nice mix of the above but a (slight) touch unbalanced. It's chocolate and earth base is cut through by hints of alcohol that just don't sit right. The dark berry flavour mixes in here and there but said alcohol masks that a bit as well. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nice and creamy overall.

I enjoyed this one for the most part, but it could use a bit of tweaking here and there to make this a really nice beer. It's good as is, but I see potential for an even better beer here.

Poured a cloudy light brown hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell that of clean malt. Mild banana and cocoa aromas as well.

The taste was very wheaty and yeasty with an interesting toasted malt streak. Sort of smooth and acrid at the same time.

The mouthfeel was full and chewy. A certain dryness as well.

Overall an interesting beer. I don't know how accurate it was for the style, but it was tasty nonetheless. Good ABV which was well masked.

appearance - Real dark brown color, small head when poured but then went flat. No lace here.

smell - Dark fruits liek raison here.

taste - Dark fruit taste up front and then a roasty alchol taste at then end.

The smell is of dark fruit and roasty goodness.

mouthfeel - Medium body.

drinkability - Been cellared for 2 years. Pretty strong beer as of now. Mostly roasted taste and alcohol is what I taste here.

Appears a murky, dark brown with some red toned edges when held to the light. A 1 finger, off-white head slowly fades out into a mild cap. Streak lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of cocoa, cream, chocolate milk, caramel, cloves, bananas, along with some biscuity breadiness from the malts and some yeasty esters.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with some yeasty spiciness coming through with the cocoa, chocolate milk, cloves, bananas, and caramel. It's actually pretty nice. I'm enjoying the flavor almost as much as the wonderfully phenolic Bavarian aromas.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, yeasty, spicy, mildly sweet, and semi-dry along the palate and into the finish.
As this is my favorite style, I'll need to see if I can find some more of this goodness. This hit the spot for an American version of a Weizenbock. Otter Creek should make this part of the regular lineup. Hmm...gimme the Copper Ale, and this one and I'm good to go for a while.
