22oz bottle received in the No BS BIF Beta from HimerMan. Thanks for the opportunity to revisit with a bit of age on it.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed 1/4" tan head over the totally murky reddish brown brew. Head falls at a moderate pace down to a almost complete coverage of tiny bubbles, with ample slow-falling lace. Aroma is chocolatey wheat, with some dark fruitiness. Taste is quite similar to the nose, and not seeing the smoke I found in my original tasting. Fruit lingers with a twinge of alcohol upon the swallow, with a powdered chocolate dryness. Mouthfeel is soft and smooth over the tongue, and drinkability is not bad at all. Glad I got to try this one again.

22 oz. bomber, released in May '07 and sampled eight months after that. It pours a dark brown (very dark for a wheat beer), with low carbonation, a few floaties, and a quickly-receding inch of khaki head. Milk and dark chocolate in the nose, with citrus, light wheat, cola, coffee, and a touch of hops - I wish the aroma were a bit stronger, but it's quite pleasant. Tastes pretty German (like an aged dopplebock), with raisins, port or sherry, mild bitterness, some powdery yeast, and a wheat backing on top of a fairly dry, almost tingly body. Overall it kinda reminds me more of a dopplebock than a weizenbock, but it's still a pretty good beer, even though it's probably better when fresh.

Clear dark copper colored with some ruddy highlights where light comes through. Four fingers of thick tightly bubbled foam that slowly recedes, leaving no lacing.

Low but rich aroma of dark malt and ripe fruit, some toffee and cinnamon.

Subtle flavor of rich dark malt, sweet without being cloying. Flavors of brown sugar, caramel, overripe fruit. ABV does not detract.

Full and round mouthfeel, creamy and satisfying. Very tasty beer, very drinkable.

Poured from a bomber to my new DSB blinky glass, DSB rocks BTW, the liquid is dark brown with good carbonation. The head is nice 2 fingers tan with just a bit of good lace.

The smell is of dark fruit and roasty goodness.

The taste is very nice I really like the roasty twist of this brew in the style. Flavors of chocolate and roasted nuts are just great as well as the dried dark fruits.

The mouthfeel is medium body and milder carbonation.

The drikability is very good I really enjoyed this, I wounder if more cellaring would have been better of not. Prosit, MK

Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head that dissipated fairly quick and did not leave much lacing. The smell is of chocolate and carob, no wheat characteristics. The taste is of red wine and chocolate, light carob, has a noticable alcohol presence. Definitely way more on the bock side than weizen side. The feel is light and almost watery, finishes a bit on the sweet side. An average brew, not something I will seek out again.

22oz bomber, served in a pilsner glass.

A - dark brown color with a big tan head that settled to a light layer, leaving some rings of lace.

S - roasted malt and date/raisin aromas.

T - sweet roasted flavor, light, dry bitterness on the finish.

M - light/medium bodied with light carbonation.

D - a little too sweet to have more than 1 or 2 glasses of this brew.

I got this one in a trade with jwc215. Thanks, Joe!

This pours a clear deep brownish-red with a good 2 finger head of foam that shrinks to a solid layer but lasts for the entire session and it has plenty of sticky lacing.

The smell is malty, roasty, and spicy and has a nice strong presence of chocolate. Very nice nose.

The taste has nice complexity with sweet malt, clove, banana, roasted malt and a touch of dark fruit most noticeable when I swish the beer in my mouth. Wow, it's also quite warming. More sips in and I'm picking up on some good hot chocolate character. The mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side, the carbo is light and the finish is bittersweet from the chocolate. Very tasty. A very nice sipper indeed! Okay, I just started drinking from my second pour and the mouthfeel seems to have redeemed itself..I get a creamier feel to it.

Bottom line: I think this an excellent example of the style and I'd gladly revisit. Thanks again, Joe!

22oz. bomber: This has been hiding in the back of the fridge for awhile, but not too long. This one pours a clear, but dark brown color. Mine had a decent tan head on it, but it dropped away quickly. The first whiff is definitely caramel, with some roastiness and chocolate to follow. The taste is good. The first thing you notice is actually a touch of maple. It is followed by some chocolate and a touch of caramel and toffee. Some spiciness is there also. It is pretty well balanced, with out being overly sweet. A decent brew.

Pours very dark brown, with little in the way of highlights or a head. Aromas all skew toward the sweet side: a bit of brown sugar, blood orange and spice, but not very expressive overall -- it doesn't remind me of other German weizenbocks that I've had. On the palate, sweet first off, with some earthy, almost claylike notes and ethanol, followed by almost miniscule fruitiness and some yeastiness. Very thick mouthfeel with big carbonation. Nothing in the way of acidity. This is a weird beer. It doesn't have some of the phenolic and estery aromas of a wheat beer, nor does it have the acidity of a wheat beer. It's thick and sweet with little in the way of lightness on the palate. Still, the flavors involved make for a tasty beer, regardless of style.

Split this bottle with BA Stopper. poured at cellar temp into a snifter the beer exhibits a rich mahogany color with small fizzy beige head foaming up and fading quickly to an edge layer. Aroma is rich and malty caramel and raisins with some berry and maybe a hint of cloves.Very fine tingly carbonation with average body and smooth texture. Flavor is malty and caramel and dark fruit, a bit of yeasty dough and some berries too. Sweet malt dominate with a surprising amount of roasted malt almost to coffee ground flavor mixing on the finish. The beer is quite tasty and drinks easily. A nice beer.

Another stop on Otter Creek's World Tour, this beer combines the light body of a hefe with the heavy malt of a bock, two dependable German styles. Unlike the German brand, this beer begins with a decapitated pour - without a head, which ain't normal for the type. In fact, what little head there was evaporated immediately leaving neither lacing nor any perceivabele aroma. However, the potent taste of malts with a hint of banana was there. A dark ruby red coloring and a small stream of carbonation bubbles - perhaps, my bottle was bad: I received it at New Years and drank it over a month later. I would not go out of my way - at least not to Germany. I still respect Otter Creek for the effort. Prosit!

Sampled & reviewed on 10/27/06:

Ap: Deep nut brown. Very thin head when poured & it dissipated almost immediately. Carbonation seems a bit low to style. Used to more carbonation in wheat based beers....

Ar: Yeasty wheat aromas with hints of chocolate noted. The chocolate seems a bit out of place. A bit smoky too. Slight alcohol noticeable.

Ta: Rich, roasty flavor with wheaty, yeasty, malty middle. A slight burnt flavor mixed in too..almost smoky. Close to a rauchbier's flavor in ways. The alcohol noted in the aroma not detectable in the flavor.

Mo: Chewy & rich. Medium to full bodied. Crisp with good carbonation which was surprising as it looked lightly carbonated when poured. Finishes clean.

Dr: A sipper. Refreshing but very rich & filling.

Comments: Nice & flavorful. The richness would lend this to be a good one to share with friends....

22oz, no date
Pours a dark red with a thin head of tan/brown bubbles. Aroma is sharp yeast and toasted grain. Taste follows suit with the aroma. Burnt caramel and a touch of chocolate malt. Next to no aftertaste. Hint of roasted malts linger. Just OK. Nice beer, but there are better weizenbocks out there. Not very complex. Almost a brown ale.

Pours a cola color with a small head of light tan foam. Decent retention and a very small amount of lace remains along the sides of the glass.

Aroma is of dark malts with the essence of toffey or caramel. Some chocolate aspects also.

Taste starts out as a wheat and malt mixture. The toffey and/or caramel is also noticed again. Slight fruitiness on the finish akin to either cherry or plum--quite subtle though. Definitely seems to improve as it warms slightly.

What I dont like about this beer in particular is that it is slightly thin in mouthfeel. These are supposed to have a little more substance than this. Cant really say I'd recommend this. Its decent to try once but I'm not in a hurry to buy more.

The beer poured into the glass clear dark amber brown with a brownish low head which had a bit of persistence but barely laced the glass.

The aroma was chocolate and caramel with an impression of wheat. The aroma was fruity with some banana esters. As the beer warmed a coffee roasty character emerged with a toasted marshmallow aroma.

The flavor was roasty and bready with chocolate and coffee. Some wheat character was present with banana at a lower level and again a toasty marshmallow flavor.

The finish was dry with lasting impressions of light roast, coffee, toasted marshmallows and light banana. The body was medium with a fairly low carbonation level. The mouthfeel was a bit lacking. Good drinkability on this one since the alcohol was well hidden. A nice beer, more of a porter than anything else but an interesting beer to begin a cold evening with.

22 ounce bottle.
