16oz glass at Beer Revolution in downtown Edmonton. Wow, Howe Sound really seems to like using this particular fruit in their brews - I wonder if they abound in the Squamish area?
This beer appears a murky, dark amber tinted brown colour, with a thin cap of wispy and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of fading wave crest lace around the glass as things quickly subside.
It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, muddled black berry notes, a hint of earthy anise spice, and some minor leafy and weedy hoppiness. The taste is a more focused blueberry fruitiness up front, with some heady caramel/toffee malt, brown sugar, chalky cocoa powder, maybe a hint of cafe-au-lait, and more plain leafy, earthy, and floral hop bitterness.
The carbonation is adequate in its workaday and genial frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, nothing really getting into much trouble here. It finishes sweet - both generically fruity and robust in its maltiness.
Overall, a pleasant stout, gently buttressed by the titular fruit character - so if you're looking for a big blast of blueberry, maybe this isn't your thing. I was more into the engaging weight and complexity, but hey, that's just me.
