8oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. I verified that this isn't the Cloudburst White IPA from a few years back - don't know why this brewery would re-purpose the name.
This beer appears a clear, dark red brick tinted brown colour, with one finger of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some pockmarked concrete wall lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, a lesser toasted toffee sweetness, muddled black stone fruit, further wet ashy notes, and some plain earthy, weedy, and gently perfumed floral noble hop bitters. The taste is roasted grainy and doughy caramel malt, a bit of meaty char, some mixed bruised pome and citrus fruitiness, faint day-old coffee, hints of medium chocolate, and more understated earthy, musty, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly meek in its workaday frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, just a touch of smoke getting a little too friendly with my palate here. It finishes off-dry, the malt still large and definitely in charge.
Overall - not a bad version of the style, as the generic Strong Ale is typically generically boozy, and this one holds its liquor well. Still feeling weird about this one's provenance, but that should sort itself out soon enough.
