The base of this blend is our award winning Woolly Bugger Barley Wine aged 9 months in Baker’s bourbon barrels. It was then blended with additional Barley Wine and Abbey Quad to become Monolith. It features a constantly evolving series of flavours, folding in on itself and revealing delicate new complexities with each sip. Toffee, treacle, and candied apples all emerge, with raisins, plums, and myriad other flavours dancing on the edge of perception. It displays a moderate bitterness, subtle heat, and rich, alluring aroma.

Notes from a blind review
Big ol' barrel aged American barleywine here I think. Nicely sweet up front, I get tons of caramel that is quite candy-like. No rough or charred edges to it. Sugar cookies emerge as this warms. There is plenty of clean booze and a little raisin here as well. The finish stays plenty sweet and plenty boozy, but adds a nice bitter tingle. Call it an oaky char. Big and brassy, clocking in at...14% maybe? I'm liking this a lot!

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown with minimal tan head. The nose is incredible. Sweet toffee, figs, dates, maple, vanilla, and a bit of fudge. The taste is insane. Again, sweet toffee, bready malts, almonds, fig newtons, maple, vanilla, blackberries, raisins, bourbon, and some chocolate. A bit of marshmallow comes through with time. Just an incredible barleywine. Mouthfeel is viscous and sticky. Lovely overall.

Howe Sound Brewing 'Monolith' barrel aged barleywine @ 12.4% , served from a 473 ml can
A-pour is a funky amber from the can to a dirty brown/amber in the glass with a small beige head , dissipating into a minimal lace ring along the tulip
S-Bourbon barrel aging
T-strong & smooth , Woolly Bugger plus 9 months in Baker Bourbon barrels
MF-mild carbonation , feels full bodied , very warming
Ov-Wooly Bugger+ , another well crafted beer

I was afraid this could be a train wreck, but it’s ridiculously good. Oaky tannins for balance, some vanilla accompanies the sweetness, candied ginger, cinnamon, hint of peanut brittle, and the quad brings some additional depth with the dark fruits.
