A: Very dark with some light coming through when held up to a light source. Pours with a one finger medium-dark tan head that simmers down pretty quickly.
S: Smells of roasted malt and some piney hops. Drank this one rather quickly so perhaps there would be more there after letting it sit for awhile.
T: Taste is really great. Like a big boy version of their artist-inspired black IPA. Imagine that but with more (piney) hops and a higher (though well disguised) ABV. The dark malt contributes a nice roasty characteristic that nicely compliments the hop bitterness.
M: The general lighter mouthfeel of an IPA has been achieved even with the dark malt additions. Although this beer is very hoppy I did not get much sense of the thicker hop oily mouthfeel that some imperials deliver.
O: I hope they make this a mainstay as I thoroughly enjoyed it. A perfect dark IPA companion to Double Trouble in their class 2 list. I've enjoyed all of Founders' forays into this (relatively) newer style of beer and hope they keep tinkering with it.
