An absolutely heinous brew. Look, I love spicy beer. Habanero Sculpin? Hell yeah. Abraxas/Huna/MexiCake/etc.? Splendid. Hell, one of my favorite local beers of all time is a hatch chile-infused cream ale from Fate Brewing. Like liquid green chile cornbread. I. LOVE. Spicy. Beer.

So, naturally, I had to give this a run out when I saw it on tap. All I knew was that it was All Day (a SIPA I otherwise enjoy) aged in hot sauce barrels. Based on the info here on BA, apparently those barrels had previously held bourbon, KBS, maple syrup, AND hot sauce. Very interesting indeed, and maybe that sheds a bit of light on some of the notes I experienced in the beer. As for that beer, well, yeah, I'm sticking with heinous. Flat off the tap, zero head, zero bubbles, just a tangerine-colored liquid, thick looking as you swirl it in the glass. On the palate, that thick body is confirmed, and combined with the lack of carb (and awful flavors) makes it tough stuff to slug down. Nose is bbq sauce/bbq potato chip, slight tomato/vinegar notes, and more bbq sauce. Palate is similar, not really spicy so much as tart (a la vinegar?), and then with an awful sweet note as well (perhaps from the previous maple syrup barrel use?). Again, I love spicy beer. I love weird adjuncts in general (to wit, Ballast Point's Thai Chili/Ginger/Lime Wahoo Wheat is totally a winner for me), but this was a spectacular failure and, arguably, one of the worst beers I've tried.

Avoid at all costs.

An abused IPA that had already been discarded in the first place, now beaten to within an inch of its life, and tortured to death with stale hot sauce.

Had a 5oz taster at MiKro in Hamden last night for the Founders take-over. Comes out a slightly hazy rust color with no head. Smell is very similar to Tabasco with the spicy vinegar at the forefront, definitely worried about this as I am not a huge Tabasco fan since it is too vinegar-y for me. After first sip I'm much more pleased with this. It starts sweet and bready and then there is a big blast of hot sauce flavor, but sans the heat. Long finish of hot sauce with hints of barrel woodiness, very much like a bloody mary. No real hops present here anymore. Mouthfeel is a little thin due to the lack of carbonation, taste lingers for quite some time. Overall it's a cool experience to try it, I honestly liked it and thought it was good, but I would hesitate getting 12oz of it.

Appearance - The beer was yellow with a reddish tint.

Smell - The spice comes through in the nose, as does some sweetness.

Taste - This is a bloody mary beer. Tomato spice is present with a hint of sweetness. Though there is tobasco, there is no vinegar. You can almost taste worchester sauce. The session ipa is largely masked. The spice lingers a little in the end.

Mouthfeel - For the style, the beer was appropriately thin. The carbonation faded with aging.

Overall - Finally, a beer for Sunday brunch!

I think like the casual chef, they tried to fix a mistake with hot sauce. Worth tasting but not pinting...

For what it's worth, I shared the taster with two others. All I got was liquid hot sauce but the other two got the maple up front.

What was Founders thinking? This is a horrible idea for a beer. A session IPA aged in bliss barrels with Tabasco sauce? I thought that Untombed was bad, but this is the second horrible draft beer in a row that I drank from Founders today. Are they trying to scare people away from drinking their beer or what???? It smells and tastes like angry Tabasco sauce with no hops whatsoever. The beer comes accross thin and does not contribute any of the barrels that it was aged in. What a waste of perfectly good barrels.

Nice reddish-orange hue with a 1.5 finger head that pretty much stayed throughout and clung to the glass nicely. Aroma of hot sauce with a slight citrus aroma in the background. Taste is very reminiscent of a Bloody Mary with the peppery hot sauce upfront and throughout along with tomato, black pepper, pickles and a faint amount of citrus. Not a ton of heat but there is a lot of flavor from the BliS hot sauce barrels. It isn't overdone though. On the low end of medium bodied with the carbonation on the lighter side which I think works pretty well for this beer. An interesting take on All Day IPA that I enjoyed. Definitely not something I could drink all the time and one pint was plenty.

At first it was fine, It was peppery without the heat until it went down. I couldn't finish a 10oz pour of it it. It felt like every sip was giving me a 2 min heart burn once it was down. Did remind me of a bad version of a bloody mary.

This is like the beer version of Inception. I could not even guess what this was going to taste like. The hot sauce taste is the strongest of the flavors. I didn't get much of the other stuff. It was still worth a try. I would recommend it just for the cool experience.

Tasting notes: hot sauce and beef broth.

It tastes better once it's warmed up to room temperature because then it seems like you're drinking soup rather than beer.

I might have spewed whiled drinking it, or I might have just been tasting the beer in my mouth.

This beer certainly looks different than the standard "All Day," showing a decided ruby cast in the light that suggests it was thoroughly dyed by the time in the "Blis Blast" barrels. The smell is straight Bloody Mary/Michelada, dominated by hot sauce and a lemony citrus scent from the hops.

However the taste is shockingly complex and enjoyable. Yes, the hot sauce dominates, but rolling in behind it is a nice hit of those "All Day" hops, providing a nice counterpount. On the mid-palate, one finds the distinctive flavors of coffee, bourbon, and maple syrup one would expect, given the barrels' previous occupants, plus surprising flavors of pickled okra and cocktail onions, celery, and tomatoes. This may not be a daily drinker, but a damned bold and tasty experiment that has given me a choice new brunch beer.

Pint glass at the Good Dog. I'm going on the side of bad idea, good execution with this one. Not an everyday drinker like Dead Rise but I'd have some point. Along with Oskar Blues Blood Orange Pinner, interesting to see what some breweries are doing with their session IPA's during Philly Beer Week.

"What were they thinking?"
"Have they lost their damn minds?"

These are just a few of the things that come to mind when you hear the description. Yet, the beer comes across surprisingly well. As the barrel that has housed everything from KBS stout, to maple, to hot sauce, and bourbon now housed the relatively flimsy session IPA, an absolute dumpster fire of taste was to be expected, but...

BliS Blast All Day has no commonalities as the original IPA as its reds and ambers dominate the beerscape. With no reasonable head character, a passing waft reveals the spicy tingle of airborn capsacin, fruit and deep caramelization. And as the saline sweetness graces the tongue, the mind goes directly towards bloody marry drinks.

Fruity-sweet upfront, the ale quickly favors the true pepper flavors, equipped with vegetative chili pepper flesh and a bell pepper type of sweetness. And as the salsa-like, tomato-base garners attention, the hop bitterness also begins to show. Grapefruit, orange peel and its light piney bitterness assist the peppery heat, heading into finish.

Medium-light on the palate, the light carbonation allows the beer to sit flatly on the tongue, saturating each tastebud fully, one by one. As its salty brine penetrates the mouth, its rounded savory character hits full stride as the ale finishes warm, spicy and herbal with echoes of bloody marry in aftertaste.

Had this last night on tap. Not my thing, didn't get any barrel, got plenty of hot sauce. Paired with Kimchi fries, worked alright, but didn't really work on its own. Don't mind some heat with body, this beer just doesn't carry the day
