Very Good
Unraveled IPAUnraveled IPA
Notes: Formerly 'Mothership Series #7: Mucho Lupu'

We unraveled some of our favorite American hops to get to the juicy goodness inside. Dry hopped with traditional hop pellets along with lupulin powder, an innovative hop product that separates lupulin from the hop flower, Unraveled IPA is incredibly flavorful and aromatic. Wheat and oats form a smooth backdrop to carry all those wonderful hop characteristics, while the pour is beautifully clear.

12 ounce can pours a clear golden color with a nice off white head of tight bubbles, leaves good lacing in my glass. Fresh grapefruit and pine aromas, citrus and pine flavors. Medium bodied, finishes dry. Very drinkable at 6.6% alcohol.

Results of two 12 oz. cans poured into a clear glass liter mug begin with a lovely bouquet. There are plenty of hops in the air, dominated by a dry character, but not devoid of more resinous ones. The brew pours out crystal light amber with abundant carbonation producing a frothy white head and glass lacing. Some of the head endures. The taste is soft on the palate, yet brings enough hoppiness from beginning through the finish. What lingers is a subtle dry hop bitterness that induces another visit. Although missing much of the advertised juiciness, this is a very good AIPA.

Unquestionably my current favorite IPA.
Big hop and huge citrus flavor, but nearly no aftertaste. This a very delicious beer.
I'd love to find this exact flavor in a 4.0% ABV.

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is straw gold, head is off white with fine bubbles, head presents 1 finger thick and lingers well with nice lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is hop dust with powerful citrus, lighter stonefruit and subtle pine/juniper notes.

Taste is quite pleasant with big citrus/grapefruit rind upfront, lighter stonefruit, earthy hop notes follow; malt is noted with light honey like character, touch of caramel, light lingering sweetness.

Mouthfeel is crisp carbonation, moderate sweetness, lingering bitter component.

Overall a fresh, fruity, floral and lightly bitter IPA.

Can poured into a Founders Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours golden yellow with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and laces nicely.

S: Opens with a lively mix of citrus zest and pine, some dank herbal notes, then it slowly opens to tropical and stone fruit, tied together with slightly crackery biscuity malt, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Zesty citrus, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and a touch of tangerine, a little resinous pine, tropical and stone fruit, mango, passion fruit, apricot, and a hint of papaya, floral and dank herbal notes hiding in there, slightly crackery biscuity malt, and just a touch of sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: It's been a little while since I've had a proper IPA with a flavor profile like this. I'm really enjoying this one.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Nearly clear light golden pour with thick foamy white head. Great lacing.

S: Nice mix of citrus and pine.

T.F: Follows the nose. Light grains/malts with grapefruit citrus and pine hops. Evergreen... light tropicals and rind. Medium bodied... well carbonated. Moderate bitterness with a little bite.

O: A nice almost-throwback IPA from Founders. Easy drinking... one to re-visit.

L: Hazy straw yellow. Moderate carbonation. Glossy surface. It has plenty of lupulin oil in it. It's similiar to a New England style IPA.

S: Lots of fresh, oily, hoppy notes. The hops leave a mango and apricot impression.

T: The oily note is bitter, juicy, and refreshing throughout. That's basically the entirety of the experience.

F: Most bitter on the finish. The malt blend is very mellow and holds the hops nicely.

O: A basic, well-crafted, IPA with no frills attached. It's not exactly NE Style, but it is exactly what it should be.

From a 12 fl. oz. can dated 03/24/20. Sampled Aug 16, 2020.

The appearance is a slightly cloudy looking amber-yellow with a modest, foamy white head. Lacing.

The can is older so I do get some fruity and citrus aspects but they are definitely showing their age in the aroma. White bread underneath.

Medium mouthfeel.

Sweet taste to star but definitely a less vibrant fruitiness to follow. Kind of stale. May have been better to try 3 1/2 months ago.

Canned 6/20/20
Consumed 8/15/20

Clear pale yellow body that resembles a standard lager. Big fat thumbprint of head quickly recedes with little fanfare. Smells pretty nice; picking out lots of pineapple myself, which stands to reason as the label art bears a certain resemblance to pineapple. (Yes, I realize it's actually a hop cone, dick nose) Taste-wise, this is what I'm looking for in an IPA right now. Lots of juicy fruit flavors, but with just enough of a bitter bite (label says 50 IBUs) to keep things interesting. It's a unique approach to the modern IPA game. The trend is super low bitterness juice bombs following years of wicked bitter hop bombs. It's like we just skipped right over a necessary transition period. But now it's here in the form of Unraveled and it's nice to have some middle ground.

Picked-up a six-pack of cans at Luke's in Plymouth for about thirteen dollars. Have had many brews from these guys before, they make solid, consistent beer, for good price points. I liked this more than their flagship, Centennial, & would love to see in 15-packs.

12oz can poured into Duvel tulip. Picked up during the COVID-19 pandemic from the grocery store as part of a $10 sixer mixer. CANNED ON 03.24.2020 printed on bottom of can. So this is 3 months old. Hopefully still fresh enough.

Appearance - Pours a very large, very loose soapy white head with decent to low retention and tufts of lacing. Body is so hazy that it's almost entirely opaque, only backlit silhouettes can be seen through it. 3.75

Smell - Dank, sweet honey like grass. Caramel, charred wood. Soft, round, with only. 4.25

Taste - Bitter grass up front and throughout. Softens up in the middle but stays astringent and bitter into the aftertaste. No particularly harsh or off tones for the style. 4

Mouthfeel - Again, or the style it's not too harsh. Lingering astringency. 4

Overall - Probably about as accessible as you can hope for in style. Mostly harmless. Not challenging, not particularly interesting, but also not offensive. 4

Founders consistently brews excellent beers.
Light golden copper color with a 4F head in a Spielgelau IPA glass.
Piney aroma.
Semi viscous MF. Works well with an IPA style which can suffer from a thin body.
Very piney, citrus. Sharp hoppy finish.
Excellent beer!

Founders near the top of most categories in which it plays. Finally got to unrav, thought it's not unrivaled
a) Clear yellow body sporting, white head lasting and lacing head.
s) Pungent from the crack, and remains so: pine, grapefruit, tangerine, melon, grape.
t) Follows aroma, with fresh mouth-filling, increasing flavors (would like a bit more malt)
o) Fresh, juicy and true to it's name they unraveled bursts of hop brightness.

Pour is a golden straw yellow. Faintest touch of haze. Nice cap of chalk white foam.
Nose is pine, grapefruit, tangerine, melon
Taste follows. Pine, citrus rind, grapefruit, papaya. Nice solid bitterness to back up the juicy hops and keep you coming back for more. A touch of bready malt character on the finish.
Great beer, even at 3 months old.

I got a 6pck of this beer from the old Felpash store in Delton, MI. It poured a clear golden with thin white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had dank fruit notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with dank fruit peel presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.

Canned April 6th 2020.

Pours an ever so lightly hazed pale gold with close to a finger of foam, good lacing.

Grapefruit citrus, toasted malt, a light degree of dankness, hoppy but not too bitter character implied.

Grapefruit citrus, orange zest, toasted malt taste. Nice and hoppy but low bitterness, some dankness. Nice

Medium bodied and quite drinkable.

Good offering from Founders.

6.6 abv.

Good aroma, lightly piney, then clean and bitter.

Not a juice bomb, but a good middle of the road between West coast and NE.

Golden clarity in the glass. This IPA is fairly resinous--sharp, bitter, with a sturdy finish. Hop flavor favors southwest over northeast--so less juicy. The wheat and oat base makes the beer a light, lively, aggressively sharp taste.

Had this out on the golf course last Saturday, damn Cole nearly beat me, held him off to win the skins game 10-8, took me to the 18th to finish him.

Yellow pour, slightly hazy, 1/2" white head. Had kind of a lemon like aroma, it was nice, more of the tangerine and orange after that. Would say it leaned on the Amarillo more than the Mosaic hops here.

Some lemon and orange notes to it. Bit of mango/guava/green melon residuary hop notes after that. The flaked wheat and oats do their thing, but not so out of whack that you end up with one of those watery, loosy juicy trub bombs. Really light bodied in a good way. Carbonation just right. Has the feel of a session ipa but with a heftier alcohol content. Man can you imagine if they do 15 packs of this for around $15? All over it.

This is a real enjoyable beer that packs quite the amount of hops without getting any hop burn or flabby trub bread body. If it was from some nano brewery in BFE the score would be significantly higher methinks.

12 oz. can - Canned on 04/06/2020:

Pours golden yellow with a rush of carbonation that settles. The white foamy head lasts. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of pineapple and grass.

The taste is of grapefruit, pineapple and hay. Spicy, musty hop finish with moderate, pleasant bitterness that lasts.

It is juicy, pretty chewy, with a soft smoothness.

Hops come through in a great way. A very enjoyable brew! Great example of a modern IPA. (I was between scores on the overall, but a second beer solidified the higher of the scores.)

12oz can into a pint glass. Canned 4/6/20, so 2 months old.

Looks very good. Almost clear slightly pale yellow body. Small white head persists in some form throughout, leaving good lacing initially

Some non citrus fruit notes, a faint mustiness.

Easy drinking beer. Smooth, good notes of melon and other non citrus fruit. Light hop bite, and a warmth in the back of the throat, making the abv seem higher than it is.

Mouth between medium and full, and a little foamy. Finish a warm faintly bitter feeling

Overall, an uncomplicated easy drinking decent ipa. Can see having a short session of these anytime.

June 2020 Review
12oz can. Forgot to check the date. Poured into Founders CBS chalice.

Pour: Golden yellow, thin white foam head that leaves lots of clouds and a nice ring with decent lacing. 4.0

Nose: grapefruit, maybe some other citrus. 3.75

Taste: grapefruit, mango, hint of biscuity malt, smooth, but still very clean, crisp and refreshing. This beer could be enjoyed with most foods, most seasons. Could be a staple. 4.25

Feel: moderate to high carbonation but still feels very smooth. Clean and crisp. 4.25

Overall: enjoying it more and more as I drink it. Will buy again and can see it as a go to IPA, depending on availability (not sure if it’s seasonal or year round). 4.25
