Brief Review:
O: Another "Brewed in Detroit" special release here, though I heard it was also put in the Advent Calendars this year. Missed out on the bombers over the summer, but was able to get a crowler at the taproom. This is a BA Barleywine, a first for Founder's I believe. Bolt Cutter comes to mind, that was was a blend of a barleywine, and BA version of it, and a Maple-BA version of it. So this is the first, true, good-ole' BA Barleywine. And it's good! It smells like classic Founder's, over-hopped. Sweeter than I expected, some slight tropical notes. The bourbon could be used better. Says it's aged 2 years, but it almost comes out like a triple IPA or non-BA barleywine. Either way, it's still tasty.
Recommendation: Not amazing by Founder's standards, but a pretty decent BA Barleywine. Seek it out if you like the style.

Day 20 of the Founders Advent Calendar.
Look: orange brown, with some definite sediment floating in it (which I love). no lacing or head at all, and i poured it aggressively; made me wonder if it was basically a cask ale or had lost its carbonation!
Smell: wet, almost like a belgian. like a basement. caramel. orange zest. leather. smells like a woodworker's basement
taste: caramel, salty...salted caramel? woody, maybe that's the barrell. again, it's almost like a belgian. toffee.
feel: zesty, a little hot but not too much. for something that seemed so low-carbonation, it's surprisingly lively on the tongue, but still thick like a BA barleywine should be. a nice juxtaposition.
overall: i've had their black BA barleywine at the brewery, but i've never seen or heard of this before (outside of the advent calendar). it was actually one of the very few in there that i'd never seen anywhere else. a solid barleywine. i love the sediment, makes me feel like i'm drinking an old ale. a good companion to Founders' other offering like curmudgeon and underground mountain brown.
