Notes: An oasis of flavor in the desert of normalcy, this cocktail-inspired imperial gose is brewed with agave and sea salt then aged in tequila barrels. When it emerges we hit it with a healthy dose of prickly pear extract, lending the liquid its flamboyant fuchsia glow and mellowing out the tangy tartness with hints of berry and melon. It’s no mirage, it’s the real deal. ¡Más Agave Clásica Prickly Pear!

Bottle to snifter; split 12 oz with wife.

LOOK: bright rosy pink color, clear, carbonation is evident, small off-white head. excellent retention.

AROMA: salt, floral notes, light tequila, light citrus....quite a bit going on, though nothing dominating.

TASTE: raspberry, melon, lightly salty but less so than hinted in aroma. Sourness grows as you go through. i almost jumped this up to a 4 but the sour starting accumulating to a point where I go backwards. left it at 3.75 as I thought on the first few sips.

FEEL: light to medium body (25%), very good fizz, dry pasty feel comes at the finish...not terrible, but may get cloying depending on your tolerance for such a thing.

Interesting series. great light take on a barrel aged beer. I rated the Lime one similarly awhile back. yet to have the Grapefruit.

Review 1667
Mas Agave Prickly Pear
Founders Brewery
Date: 26 March 2021
Founder pushed brewing here with this barrel-aged Gose. I poured it into a pokal glass; the temperature was 44 degrees. A frothy and airy pink head with okay retention was created. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is reddish pink with rusty orange highlights. The beer is clear, and no activity within. The beer meets appearance parameters for this style.
I got an intense fruity aroma when I pried the top off. Next, I detect salt, tequila, oak, oranges, herbal, and agave. The final few nosing revealed wine, lightly toasted bread, honey, the slightest touch of floral. The salt, prickly pear, and tequila smashed the sense it is fragrant.
The first sip was gooey honey, prickly pear, and tequila. I get wine, agave, apple cider, a citrus note, floral, and salt for the next taste. After several sips, I pick up wood, herbal, toasted malts, dewy mornings, and vibrant earthiness. The alcohol is ever-present and is not hiding.
The mouthfeel is warming, slightly tart, and sticky. The body is medium, low carbonation, and has a lasting finish.
It is hard to call this a Gose; it is not light and crisp. I do taste; furthermore, the alcohol and barrel-age push this closer to a barrel-aged fruit beer. I love the tequila barrel age on this Gose. A unique twist on a classic. I would purchase again; enjoying this one to the last sip.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, bright orange color with a small, bubbly white head of foam. It left sticky rings of lace on the glass. It smelled of sweet fruitiness, tart lemon, salt and some caramel. Very sweet tasting with what I guess is prickly pear. Some tart and sour bite.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a stemless wine glass

This beer pours rust colored and is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves spotty lacing.

The smell is sweet and fruity. I can't say that I have ever eaten prickly pear, but it smells delicious. It comes off as a cherry aroma to me.

The taste is very similar to cherry for my untutored palate. It has nice tartness with light briny flavor.

Medium bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel

This is pretty tasty. The abv is well hidden. I like the prickly pear. Great job Founders.

APPEARANCE: Cloudy pinky amber, with a pinkish head and minimal lace.

AROMA: Berries, fruit, tequila. Interesting.

TASTE: Fruity and chewy, with a tangy-tart finish that lingers, masking the tequila barrel flavor a bit. Unusual and solid, but definitely not up to par with the lime variation.

Pours a clear ruby red with a white head that dissipates quickly and some lacing.

Tastes very sweet mixed berry like fruit beer with a mild tartness and very little salt. If you like sweet, you'll like this.

The initial sip from the bottle was heavily metallic, like sucking on a nickel (don't ask). Once I drained the bottle into the glass, that went away, so... reaction with the bottle cap? Anyhow, it poured a vibrant carmine red with a slightly pink frothy head that dissipated surprisingly fast, given that it took up half the glass initially. The scent is of raspberry (cherry?) margarita... though it edges perhaps a little too close to cherry cough syrup. While the metallic taste is largely gone, there is a flat bitterness left at the end. I started my review pretty high on this, but the longer I drink it, the less I like it.... definitely hitting the cough syrup notes more heavily. This may have been another mistaken 4-pack purchase.

Downgraded, as I couldn’t finish due to to the overpowering feeling of drinking cough syrup straight from the bottle (don’t ask).

Lightly hazy brick red with a pink tinged head that dissipates quickly. Straight up fruity margarita or wine cooler with a hint of lime sour. Really tasty and hides the alcohol well.

Appearance - The beer poured a pinkish red color with a white head.

Smell - The nose had the sweetness of a store bought drink mix. This drink reeked of raspberry syrup.

Taste - The profile reminded me of raspberry. It was very sweet, almost cloying. I did not get much tequila. All that seems to linger is the sweetness.

Mouthfeel - As with other Mas Agave variants, the body is thick.

Overall - By far, this is my least favorite Mas Agave variant.

Description: Color is a pinkish red, like a light red table wine. It's clear with a pink/white head. Smell is sweet and very fruity but not much tartness. A small amount of salt and prickly pear...I guess...I honestly don't know what prickly pear smells/tastes like. Salty, tart notes are apparent on the taste and the fruitiness comes through. Again, prickly pear...I guess. Taste is more balanced than the aroma. Feel is smooth with low carbonation and a medium-heavy body.

Overall: 4.25 (This beer is good and I would likely have it again) I pulled this out of my car after an 8-hour drive so it wasn't exactly chilled, which may have affected it. Of course, after an 8-hour drive beer tastes better than normal, which may also have affected the rating. Overall this was a good beer although it leaned a little too much to the sweet side and could have benefited from some more tartness.

12oz bottle into a tulip. Bottled 3/25/21, so 3 months old.

Looks good in the glass. Pinkish red body with a small pink tinged white head. This shrinks to a ring, leaving scattered lacing.

Sweet mixed fruit aromas, mostly non citrus.

On tasting, hard to find anything gose about this. Its sweet and fruity, kind of a mixed berries taste. There is no sour or tart aspect, no sea salt. No Agave. It's not an unpleasant drink, just comes off more of a fruit beer.

Mouth medium, finish sweet and fruity. There is a very faint tart note on the side of the tongue. (Or it could be a sore spot)

Overall, not a bad drink, just not what I expected. The original Mas Agave reigns supreme. It's worth noting that the abv is completely hidden.

I'm just going to quote the label here and tell you that this pours a "flamboyant fuchsia" because that's a pretty fucking great alliterative phrase. Head is just super creamy save for some larger bubbles around the margins that stick around and edge the glass with a foam ring. Ultimately, it looks more like a weird craft soda than a beer which makes it a little hard to rate on that front. Smells rather like soda too. Strawberry Faygo? Generic brand Black Cherry? It smells sweet and fruity but with just enough spirit lurking in the background to not be a turnoff. Tastes better than it smells. I've never had prickly pear, but there's definitely a fruity note up front before a salty shot of tequila takes over. Tart, but not mouth-puckeringly so. Medium-bodied and a little on the syrupy sweet side. I'm not certain why I absolutely had to pick this up. I like the lime Mas Agave quite a bit, but this one just isn't in its league. Were people clamoring for this? I mean, it's not a terrible idea on paper and, hell, even the execution is competent, but I'm still a little underwhelmed. Maybe I'm just annoyed with myself for not getting more lime instead.

Pours a lucious raspberry soda, lots of bubbles then looks flat. Smells fruity, but no sense that it's a "beer".
Probably the quickest way to get someone who doesn't like beer, drunk.
Looks like watermelon soda, tastes like raspberry soda, but with 9.7% ABV, NOT a soda!
Not worthy of the "Strong Beer" label, but definitely alcoholic. Perfect if you have a sweet tooth.

June 24, 2021 - I got this almost by mistake. I've only had a couple of goses before and didn't much care for them.
This is a deep pinkish red, clear. One finger of slightly pink head recedes quickly leaving almost not cap at all, just a few tiny bubble on the top, No lacing. The color is different and interesting, but I'm wary of the head; Almost no aroma; A fairly robust unusual flavor, definitely fruity. Mouthfeel is okay, especially in light of the dissipated head; Definitely one of the fruitiest looking and tasting beers, I've had.

OG Mas Agave is quite the beer, being wholly unique even in the niche market of tequila barrel aged gose meant to resemble a margarita! The grapefruit variant fell a little flat for me, honestly, but I'm thinking that prickly pear might work for this one. I've only had the fruit a handful of times, but it seems like it would be a good adjunct

Pours a slightly cloudy brownish red with 2 fingers of pink tinted head that slowly fades to a cap and leaves decent lacing

The prickly pear definitely makes itself known in the nose, very candy-like without much tartness coming through. I'm picking up on aromas of juicy watermelon, prickly pear flesh, cherry jollyrancher, honey soaked malt, and a touch of salt

While it is a bit more tart in taste, the candy aspect is way stronger, throwing it out of balance a bit. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting tart cherry, watermelon candy, smooth toffee, light oak, and lime. The swallow brings notes of overbearing watermelon candy, orange juice, tart lime, vanilla, and doughy malt

A medium full body pairs with very mild, almost nonexistent, carbonation, resulting in a slightly sticky and hefty beer. Finishes off dry with a subtle tart bite at the end

So yeah, this one, like the grapefruit one, was also quite strange. I guess it's hard to match the intensity of the original while still keeping it tart with these different fruits. Oh well, it's not like it was awful

12oz bottle poured into a tulip

A- pours a clear ruby color with a pinkish hue, one-finger foamy white head reduces to a ring around the glass

S- sweet berries and ripe melon on the nose, with aromas of gummy candies. Undertones of tequila, snow cone cherry syrup, cool aide powder

T- sweet up front with agave, the prickly pear notes giving flavors of cherries, strawberries and ripe melon. Mid-palate starts to bring out the tartness, with notes of tequila and a light saltiness. The finish gives more fruity berry-like sweetness, before lingering of tequila, salt and tart lemon

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly creamy viscous finish

12oz bottle. Label has bottled on date of '03.26.21'.
Slightly cloudy, with a ruby red colored body. One thin finger slightly pinkish head stays around. Leaves big interrupted walls of lacing. Big rising bubble show when back lit.
Aroma is lots of berry, in the raspberry and strawberry world. Has the cocktail smell of tequilla. Sweet and a little tart.
Taste is cocktail tequilla with dark berry. More sweet than tart. Same dynamic in the aftertaste.
Thicker, syrup type mouth feel. Good carbonation.
Higher ABV% is well hidden in the fruity sweetness. Definitely has the cocktail essence. May be a good choice to knock one off of a patio high temperature crisis.

Gorgeous plum purple color, decent head for a gose. Smell is dry, with sweet apple, raspberry, and earthy undertones. Taste is big! More than a lot of sours, even. Very sweet, perhaps to the dislike of some. Raspberry, cherry, and I assume prickly pear upfront. Tart on the finish, moderately so, with just a hint of that tequila. Finish is dry, and the ABV is definitely there after a few sips...
I like it, it’s like a summer cocktail in beer form. I’m a fan of the strength too, and my only complaint is that it’s a little sweet for me. It’s definitely a treat. Really curious to try the Lime variety now.

Distinct red color - I've never had a prickly pear (?), but if this is what they taste like, they do not taste like pear lol - well, I don't know - maybe they do? A red pear? I guess if that had a flavor, it would be this... Another bigger-than-life take on a traditionally light style... Definitely the fruitiest, probably the sweetest - almost tastes like a Gatorade flavor - again, these are not like beers, they're like beer and tequila cocktails - nothing wrong with that - enjoyed the hell outta all three...

The Mighty Kosmkcki has gone off the rails with this new Prickly Pear Kool Aid beer. The 10% ABV is completely masked. Fans of sweet goses will be happy. Fun and kudos for experimenting, but I'd prefer a heavier hand with the tequila flavor. Mouth feel not quite up to the base beer, which I prefer. Well made but too sweet for me.

A - Pours a clear strawberry color with pink lacing around the top and light carbonation.

S - Tart prickly pear aroma dominates. One could even say it almost smells like a raspberry/strawberry mix with a Cool Aide kinda sweetness.

T - Tart and sweet prickly pear from start to finish. Somewhat puckering and somewhat sugary sweet on the overall taste. On the very end there's a slight bit of graininess that surfaces but it's kept in check with the sweetness of the prickly pear.

M - Slightly puckering with a thick, syrupy soft texture that makes the mouth water. There's no warming whatsoever on the way down.

O - Smells and tastes just like advertised - a Prickly Pear Margarita. I don't know how they did it ... but it works.
