An oasis of flavor in the desert of normalcy, this cocktail-inspired imperial gose is brewed with agave and sea salt then aged in tequila barrels. When it emerges we hit it with a healthy dose of prickly pear extract, lending the liquid its flamboyant fuchsia glow and mellowing out the tangy tartness with hints of berry and melon. It’s no mirage, it’s the real deal. ¡Más Agave Clásica Prickly Pear!

12 oz bottle dated 3/25/21 tasted 8/26/21. Pours a murky dark amber with two-finger off-white head and some lacing. Aroma has raspberries, strawberries, prickly pear, and hints of tequila and salt. Flavors are fruity and the taste is sweet with some salt and booze in the finish. Body is medium to full with a sticky mouthfeel. There's a lot happening here. Totally unlike anything I've tried before.

Copenhagen 14/1 2022. 35,5 cl bottle from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. A drawing of a desert landscape with a skeletal arm growing as a plant holding a fruit on the label.

Pours unclear amber with a small white head. Bubbly. Settles as a thin, flimsy, almost transparent layer of foam. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is fairly intense with a sweet fruity odor mingling with a modest sour notes. Pear, sweet apple juice, tart forest berries. Hints of salt water.

Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, greasy, lightly tingling texture. A bit sticky.

Flavor is intense with a strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong sourness. Aftertaste is sweetish with a salty tang. Lingers for a while. Finish is a bit sugary with a boozy touch.

Quite on the sweet and slightly boozy side with only a moderate salty touch.

12 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 3/26/21, had 12/2/21.

Pours a darker pink, fairly clear, with a one and a half inch light pink foamy head with good retention and some foamy lacing. Aromas of tequila, prickly pear, light raspberry, light strawberry. A very floral aroma, almost perfume- like. Flavors of prickly pear, tequila, malt, sea salt, light strawberry. Has a floral taste, a little sweet, lightly tart and sour. Smooth, a very good light to medium body, well carbonated.

Never had prickly pear, but it seems to give off aromas and flavors you wouldn’t expect. Barrels are light, but enough. Very enjoyable.

Mas Agave Clasica Prickly Pear from Founders. 12 oz bottle. Purchased from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA, on 30/01/23 for $ 14.50 (Including tax) a four-pack ($ 0.302/oz). Stored on room temperature shelf at store and 34 degrees at home. Reviewed 04/02/23 (Review 3029). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Printed on back label “BOTTLED ON 03.26.21 0602 6” and “2021 Release”. Served at 35.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 43.3 degrees.
Appearance – 3.25
First pour – Deep Gold (SRM 6), clear.
Body – Atomic Tangerine (SRM 12), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, same but translucent.
Head – Average (Maximum one cm, aggressive center pour), white, high density, short retention, quickly receding to a 0.0 – 0.5 mm bubble ring, and a rocky partial cap.
Lacing – Fair. Torn bands of very tiny bubbles much past torn curtains, leaving an archipelago of linear islands.
Aroma – 3.5 – Faint whiff of prickly pear fruit and salt. No hint of tequila or mezcal. No hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.5 – Acidic, very lightly smoky, slightly sweet but refreshing with a bit of salt. No ethanol (9.7 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. No particular barrel flavors. Slight gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Tequila/mezcal most prevalent in the aftertaste.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, slightly syrupy, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 Nearly two years old but still carries some prickly pear flavor. Actually quite tasty – not as good as the lime version but still better than any other prickly pear beer I’ve consumed.

Poured a cold 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. A pinkish-white, two finger head rose above a pink/tan body. The head disappeared in a few minutes, but the brew continued to produce white lacing throughout consumption. The sour gose is front and center on the nose. Some familiar beer notes of hops and malt get through the sour fruit raspberry/prickly pear onslaught, as does a slight sweetness from the tequila, but basically, the taste is that of under-ripe berries. It has been a decade or more since I have had fresh prickly pear, so the taste of it may have faded a bit.. but to me, this tastes more like a raspberry beer, and truly more a beer brewed from extract rather than fresh fruit. The mouthfeel is the best thing about this beer, and that is not a cheerful observation. The magic I experienced in Founders Mas Agave Lime is absent from Mas Agave Prickly Pear.

Picked up a four-pack from TW-Greenville, SC 5-30-21 for $15.99. Bottled 3-26-21; consumed bottle #3 for review 4-26-22.

Beer sort of gushed upon opening, poured red with a pretty minimal head.

Nose is kind of a rotten strawberry, kind of a fake strawberry.

Taste is super sweet with a touch of sourness. Strawberries forward but lacks the barrel presence to balance and finishes sweet as a result.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly refreshing.

Overall not nearly as good as the original imperial gose.

Genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this one!

L: pours red/brown tea colored 2 fingers of thick white rocky head. Low retention, but a ton of lacing

S: sweet and fruity. definitely getting some of that agave/ tequila. Some citrus. Well rounded, nothing particular heavy than anything else.

T: pear and apple juice, tequila. Tart black berries. Sour and sweet

F: truly is prickly on the tongue. Nice mild carbonation. Hides the alcohol pretty well, but does have a astringent and drying of the mouth. Still quite refreshing, but I wish it didn’t dry the mouth so much
