Notes from 3/27

I saw that this beer has appeared on Founders/Hop Cat tap list and had to try it.

This poured darker than some IPAs (I think, lighting was bad). The color is caramely, coppery with a bit of scumy head on the sides.

The smell is very bright. It smells like a pile of citrus fruits encompassed by a pine forest.

The taste presents lemon zest, pine, grapefruit, and a hint of spicy black pepper. There is some metallic flavor, but it is pleasant. This is very balanced with a grassy hop flavor ending the taste.

This has a medium to full mouthfeel for a 6% IPA. There is a good amount of carbonation and leaves a dry aftertaste.

This IPA is very pleasant, clean, and refreshing.

They should get this into bottles as it is much more pleasing than Centennial IPA.

Had this on tap at the brewpub on the KBS release weekend. I remember it pouring a dark golden/red copper colour. It had a citrusy fruity hop taste to it and it was decent overall. I have to admit though, i was expecting a bit more from this, being Founders and all. Not a bad offering overall, but I also feel I missed out on trying a pint of something else while at the brewpub. Oh well, I got my case of KBS anyways!

my notes from the tap room 3/15/2010.

12oz pour into a pint glass.

appearance is a gorgeous, rich copper to red color with a 1 finger head and some thick, sticky lacing.

smells strongly of citrus fruit and floral hops. taste follows nose with an explosion of grapefruit, lemon and toffeeish malts. flavor is balanced well with strong, piney hop bitterness that lingers.

medium bodied but feels fairly substantial in the mouth. carbonation is heavier than i was expecting without being too fizzy.

lowish abv and bold flavor combinations make this very drinkable, but certainly not for the timid. founders has another winner on their hands. i just wish they sold it in bottles.

I had this on tap at the brewpub. The beer is dark copper colored, darker than I expected, clear with a spotty head that leaves lots of lace on the glass. Nice hoppy aroma, I was initially concerned there'd be a lot of caramel malt fighting it out but this is nicely hopped, with only neutral malts as far as the smell goes. Light citrus and floral aromas, and it smells like a touch of honey might have been used (maybe not).

The beer tastes nearly perfect, again I'm surprised that no caramel or roasted malts come through with the darker color. The only malts components I get are a little toastiness and maybe some sweetness, otherwise the hops take the stage. And not in an overly bitter way, the hops seem to present with only citrus/pine/honey flavors. Deliciously sweet aftertaste too. Medium body and light carbonation, this will be a beer to return to.
