growler purchased at the brewery april 28/2011 and kept refrigerated. sampled may 7/2011. was told this is dirty bastard with black malt.

pours deep dark brown, nearly black but with good clarity and a nice brown colour at the edges. a small cap of very fine light brown head forms, dropping quickly to a ring around the glass and leaving a delicate network of fine lace.

aroma is good. dark toasted whole wheat bread and biscuit. light cracker. some hops in there too - earthy and herbal. dark chocolate. bit of alcohol. caramel.

taste is good. dark and bittersweet chocolate. dark toasted whole wheat bread. biscuit. bit of cracker. bit of grain. nice hop character, with fairly assertive herbal and earthy character. touch of coffee. light caramel, but with nearly no lingering sweetness. bit of alcohol.

mouthfeel is good. medium-large body suits it well. medium carbonation feels just a touch high.

drinkability is good. nice balance. you can tell the dark aspects have been amped up in comparison to dirty bastard, but it seems that the hopping has too. perhaps that was done to compensate for the change, but it seems somewhat at odds with the base style. still, i wonder if simply darkening dirty bastard would have left something to be desired - too close to the original perhaps. either way, i enjoyed it.

Growler filled at Founders. Didn't have time to try this one while there, so I grabbed a growler.
Nearly black pour, large tan head that reduces to a thin layer. Retains pretty well though.

Aroma has quite a bit of ashy roast and chocolate to go with some malty caramel and peat.

Maybe not exactly to style, but this is tasty. Large roast character dominates. Ashy cocoa and peat. Caramel and vanilla are very light. Nutty peanut butter flavor like near the finish.

Very pleasant near creamy medium body. A tad harsh, but more from the ashy roast than any alcohol.

Really closer to a porter of some sort, but it tastes very good. Plus it was lumped in with the cheaper(class 1) at the brewery.

On tap at Founders. Served in a snifter.

Pours a very, very dark brown with a thin tan head that persists for a bit before fading into a thin collar around the edges. The nice has a bit of nice sweetness and some dark fruits. Some toasted malt as well. Molasses and brown sugar carry through as it warms up. The flavor has a really nice molasses-like character along with dark fruits and a bit of warming booze in the finish. Medium body with low carbonation. Very well done.

Growler picked up at the brewpub, thanks grub!

Pours a dark and opaque blackish red, a bit of light comes through right around the edges, medium sized tan head forms and settles to a medium ring around the glass, lots of lace spots stick, looks pretty good.

Smell is sweet and malty, lightly nutty, a bit of ash and smoke, caramel and toffee, light biscuit and a touch of roast, fruity, some raisin and a touch of cherry, some tobacco, lightly milky and sweet, malt balls, alcohol is well hidden, nice.

Taste is similar, very malty, lightly ash and smoke, a bit woody and astringent, black malt, toffee, fruity sweetness, raisins, some biscuit and light toast, tobacco, sweet milky finish, light chocolate roastiness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Pretty drinkable stuff, a little too ashy for me to love but a real nice beer, super smooth. Thanks Russ!

Blackish brown colored pour with a strong tan head. Lots of roasted malts & chocolate aromas coming through on the nose. Not much depth to the flavor it was pretty much the same from start to finish, it tasted good but didn't go through too many transitions. Mouthfeel is a little bitey but also dry and medium bodied. Overall pretty nice brew and worth a try. Could see why this is a Scottish Ale, I thought it was more like a heavy porter or stout.
