Had on tap at Founders, served in an awesome snifter (I'll have to see if I can buy the glass...)
A - Dark, muddy brown with a hint of red shining through around the edges. Not much head, decent lacing.
S - Very smooth rye whiskey, caramel, vanilla, with some roasty malt to balance the sweetness.
T - Really damn good... vanilla, caramel, and spicy rye, with some lingering roasty bitterness and a slight whiskey bite.
M - Of course the Founders stout has absurdly good mouthfeel. Thick and chewy and smooth and awesome.
Overall, this is great. Distinct from their other special stouts, but every bit as good.

On tap at the brewery, into a sample glass and oversized snifter several times over. I think this brew was 8.9%, but the "9" was smudged on the board. Regardless...
Black in body with deep browns at the edges. Light head on every pour, only leaving some spotty lace and mild retention. Loads of rye barrel in the nose, oak with a kiss of vanilla. Some roast and dark chocolate, but the smooth barrel character really keeps everything in check and pulls this together. Flavour has more sweet rye barrel character, butterscotch, light oak and again only a bit of vanilla. Some light coffee and roast notes. No alcohol on the palate, the barrel character is almost seamlessly integrated. Low carbonation - overall a very well done rye stout, that maintains excellent drinkability and balance in all regards.

On-tap at Founders' Brew Pub in Grand Rapids, MI...
A: Pours a nice black with reds around the edges. There is a small dark khaki colored head that settles quickly. It has a small amount of creamy lacking as it drinks.
S: Smells like chocolate, caramel, cream, and booze. I'm digging it.
T: I get a solid amount of barrel aging with this one. But once that moves off the palate, its chocolate and slight spice. I get a touch of caramel, but it's basically chocolate and awesome rye whiskey heat from start to finish . It's delicious.
M: Full bodied beer. It starts out hot, but it's oh so creamy. Smooth and satisfying. Damn the mouthful is great.
O: Overall this beer is super solid. Great barrel heat like KBS without overpowering. It's spicy yet sweet. Fantastic beer!
