Half-litre brown glass bottle purchased at a Vero supermarket in Skopje. Label depicts cherries but otherwise is just red and white and basic. Has a branded red pry-off crown cap. Best before: 07/05/16. Reviewed from notes taken in February 2016.

4.0% ABV. Served cold into a nonic pint.

HEAD: Pink. Creamy, frothy, and of good consistency, with a nice complexion. The pink hue sets it apart from other beers. Light uneven lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes, which takes a good 5-6 minutes.

BODY: Translucent red of average vibrance. I see no yeast within.

Appears well-carbonated. Some might find it redolent of cough syrup, but I think it's decent looking for a cherry beer.

AROMA: Seems too sweet, with heavy candied saccharine artificial cherry notes. It doesn't dip into medicinal American cough syrup aromatics, but I wouldn't call it natural, genuine, or pleasant. If not cough syrup, then cough lozenges.

No hop profile, no yeast profile, nothing except the cherry. Aromatic intensity is moderately high.

TASTE: Matches the aroma. Ester-free lager yeast gives it a clean presentation of flavour, and cherry is dominant. Definitely artificial cherry flavouring; there's nothing remotely genuine about it. I imagine the malt backbone is comprised merely of simple pilsner malts. It's not medicinal or cough-syrup redolent, but its artificiality is definitely off-putting. I don't care for it, but I've had worse.

No hop profile. No subtlety, nuance, or intricacy/complexity. Lackluster depth of flavour (i.e. it's shallow).

TEXTURE: Sticky from the candied cherry flavours. Smooth, wet, unrefreshing. It's not syrupy or anything, which is a plus. But it doesn't exactly elevate the beer as a whole, even though it does emphasize the cherry flavour...if the cherry was pleasant, this would be a good mouthfeel. But it just ain't.

Overcarbonated, but not direly so.

OVERALL: Likely aimed at female drinkers in Macedonia, Skopsko Cresha is an unrepugnant cherry beer with nothing to offer the discerning drinker. Drinkable albeit unremarkable. To its credit, it could have been a whole lot worse, with overtly cough syrupy cherry notes and a thicker more syrupy mouthfeel. That said, I don't think anyone would be too torn up if this was discontinued tomorrow. The biggest plus here is probably the price point at which its offered...provided only you're from a country with a higher GDP per capita than Macedonia.
