A London style brown ale. Dark & Mild. It has been said to rival the best of England's brown ales & has certainly become a local favourite.

Verbatim from notes 16JUL11
Brown ale with brilliant clarity and no head, no surface bubbles, no lace. Smells of brown sugar, roasty malts, sweet bread. Hints of hazelnut and a sprinkle of flour on the nose. Taste is sweet, roasty, with hints of tomato, grain, pretzel and a touch of buttered wheat toast. Light body wit hlow carb. Dry finish appropriate for the style. Not a bad offering at all. The malts are nice, just barely on the sweet side of satisfaction.

A - poured from a 650ml bottle into a tulip glass. It pours clear dark brown. When held to light it is a very deep red color. The head vanishes fast but leaves some lacing.
S - roasted malt, fruit and flowers
T - sweet malt and fruit with light hops and a light nutty finish
M - medium carbonation, medium-thin body and slightly dry finish
D - solid all around

Sampled on 7/31/2009 at the brewpub in Victoria, from a flight of six. This was probably the weakest one. Very good appearance, dark and rich (but not as dark as the Riley's Scotch Ale) and alluring. Very thin head: almost no foam. The taste was actually rather nice: just leaning onto the sweet side of the spectrum. I got occasional hints of chocolate while swirling it around my mouth. The mouth was the real disappointment: the beer is extremely thin and watery, almost insubstantial.
Summary: this beer averages out to a 3 in my book--not bad, not great.

Pretty translucent brown with moderate head. The nose is malty and slightly sweet. This is a fine drinking brown with enough malt backbone and finish to make it interesting. There is a dryness on the finish that keeps me coming back for more. Not their best beer but still pretty tasty.

Was served a transparent walnut hue with a small sticky head. A mild nutty nose to it, everything else was very faint. It had a light nutty, almost fruity sweet flavour, with a dandelion-like hop finish. Very thin mouthfeel however. An average brewpub brown ale, I was more interested in the scenery around me after the first few sips.

The menu listed this as hand-pumped. It came in a 16 oz. pint glass. The beer is clear, medium brown with a 1/4" white head. The smell is mild and pleasant malty with a hint of bread. The flavor is the highlight with a nice malty initial flavor with a little brown sugar and a medium to long-lived malty finish with light bitterness. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, slightly watery and a mild carbonation, as expected for a hand-pumped ale. Overall, it is very drinkable british-style brown that is very enjoyable with the pub fare at Swans.

A true English-style session ale! Brown appearance with an off-white head. No mistaking that this is a brown ale.
Malty, toffee smell with a respectable hop balance...but it is just to weak. I really have to inhale to appreciate the smell. Chocolate hints.
Good, rounded taste. Even balance, with the emphasis on malts. Toffee, slight chocolate flavours. Hops stop this from becoming too sweet. Good body and carbonation. This can be enjoyed by the tourist and the regular alike and is easily a session ale or an accompaniment. Almost bordering on a dark mild.

Poured into a 6oz flared taster glass
Decent sounds of carbonation upon opening, nothing too vigorous. Head retention is a little weak, with no trace of it after about 20 seconds. Clarity is fine, and the colour looks bang-on brown. It looks like there is some actual substance in this beer. lets see
The nose- a little roasty, with notes of toffee and weak coffee. Nothing overwhelming- the flavours seem nicely balanced
A taste to match. The subtly sweet roasted flavour comes through right away and lingers for a moment, is briefly followed by a tangy note, then finished with a very dry mild hoppy goodness. Leaves my mouth feeling pretty good about what I just drank.
Like many English-style ales, this beer is well-rounded and unoffensive. An easy drink - one for both the connoisseur and the lay-drinker.
