The appearance is a blend of dark blacks and browns with a swirling soft tan carbonation on the surface.
This is very expressive of the rye character right away. Peppery, splintery oak adds to the rye, with faint touches of raisin and cocoa. As it warms, a woody smokiness and a strong punch of tobacco emerge.
The medium body is a little lighter than normal, making it far more drinkable than you'd expect, as the finish is semi-dry to dry.
