Brewed for GABS Festival in Melbourne, May 2014. Unclear whether they just aged a batch of their regular scotch ale in whisky barrels or brewed a special scotch ale to be aged in whisky barrels. Tried at GABS on tap.
Pours a brownish amber colour, slight cloudiness to it, foamy beige head. Leaves some lovely lace behind.
Smells like a scotch ale, and not getting a lot of oak character which is a shame. Caramel malt is thick, blending with a touch of red wine that gets almost mediciney towards the back. Very much just smells like the regular Red Hill Scotch Ale.
Taste is sweet, with vanilla-tinged caramel malt upfront. Develops a touch of red wine midway that again becomes slightly mediciney towards the back. Mild coconut character gives a touch of that oak, but most of the sweetness and complexity just comes from the malt. Pleasant drop though.
Full body, decent balance with the booze and carbonation cut-through.
Decent, but it just leaves me hungry for more oak character.
