For centuries, the natives of Franconia in Upper Bavaria have brewed these unfiltered cask-conditioned red lagers in accordance with both the German Purity Law and local tradition. The result is a full-bodied yet lower ABV amber-colored beer with dueling notes of roast and fruit. Given the renewed demand for complex lagers, Tucher has decided it’s finally me for this storied style to make it’s American debut.

500ml can from Total Wine near Katy, Texas
Best buy date of May 2027, canned in Feb 2026.
Hazy medium copper. Light beige substantial head.
Toasted wheat bread, brown sugar and molasses on the nose.
Slightly sweet, dark fruit, molasses, very subtle sweetness in the finish. There’s a surprising amount of bitterness that shows itself kind of in the middle. Very pleasant and nothing offensive to whine about. Most excellent, hope I find it again someday.

Many thx to CarolinaCardinals for this can!

A - Hazy amber red colored pour with dense, creamy, off-white foam resting on top.

S - Nice biscuity malt aroma with some yeasty presence and a little bit of bread crust.

T - Biscuity, bready caramel malt with a little bit of breadcrust, and light earthy citrus on the hops.

M - Big medium body with light, prickly carbonation.

O - This beer is all about the malt and nicely done.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a hazed copper color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, fading slowly and leaving a ton of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strong of toasted bready smell mixed with notes of molasses and caramel. Along with these smells comes notes of yeast and some light earth.
Taste – The taste begins with a very bready flavor, that of a lightly toasted breadcrust variety. At the same time there are flavors of caramel and molasses, along with notes of brown sugar and yeast. There is also a light nut flavor along with notes of earth. As the taste advances, a little bit of cherry and prune join in, adding a bit more sweetness, and leaving one with a nice lightly toasted and malty taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body is a bit on the thicker and chewier side for a 5.2 % abv brew, with a more moderate carbonation level.
Overall – A rather nice, slightly sweeter, and more malty brew that has a nice easy drinking nature.

Pours deep Amber almost copper; hazy body; off-white head with a few rocks; OK cap Retention; solid ring; spots of lace. Caramel malt nose; baked bread. Tongue follows nose with mild bitterness. Clean, dry feel; medium minus body; moderate minus carbonation. Overall, the taste is biscuit with a drizzle of caramel; A bready malt forward lager that is quite tasty.

16.9 oz can poured into a dimpled mug. Hazy amber body with some ruby highlights. Khaki head pours 2 fingers thick and then falls to a nice cap. Nice lacing left behind in the glass. Smell is malts up front, some generic fruit, some brown bread. Taste starts sweet and malty, sweet brown bread. Middle stays sweet with more malt character as it transitions to the finish with some herbal/fruity hops and yeast (at least that's my impression of the fruity character). Aftertaste is short with buttered dark bread and earthy herbal tastes rounding it out. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, a bit creamy with lower carbonation. A bit dry in the finish too. Overall, malt dominates here which isn't a bad thing. Reminds me some of a Vienna lager with more malt oomph. Enjoyable beet and a nice deviation from the hoppy beers that seem to be everywhere.

16.9 ounce can, produced JUL.25.2025, best by OCT.25.2026 stamped on the bottom of the can. Served in a dimpled mug, the beer pours a hazy reddish/amber color with about an inch or so frothy off-white head that stuck around for a long time. Lots of lacing, too. I like the aroma, the brew smells like bready malt, caramel, apple and a bit of dark fruitiness. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with some banana and nutty flavors noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy and smooth with a good amount of carbonation. Overall I liked this one a lot, I'll have to pick up more the next time I come across it!

Despite an overly generous head, the entire contents of a 16.9 fluid ounce can managed to fit inside a clear glass liter mug. The, let's call it foam, is light tannish-beige and it recedes unevenly, leaving irregular glass lacing. That improves as the foam reduces to a proper head. The brew itself is dull copper-amber. It's relatively, but not completely opaque. There's mostly malt to smell, but it's not particularly rich, nor sweet. Its taste is much fuller than expected, much like a moderately toasted whole grain bread. Sweet, but complexly so and grainy, with enough hop counterbalance to provide a full extra level of flavor. Accumulately, it may get a little yeasty, which gives the finish a little stickiness by the end of the session. But, that's a small price to pay for its delicious taste. Other than that, the mouthfeel is delightful and a quick finish of the serving makes you look for another.

Appearance: Clear amber/red, huge head.

Smell: Sweetened bread with a spicy note.

Taste: Balanced, mildly sweet bread with a bit of toasted note. Slightly earthy. Medium body. Finishes with a mix of slight sweetness and mild earth.

Overall: This can is a year and a half past its best-buy date but doesn’t really taste old, but does seem muted somewhat.

500ml can, painted label. Bottom stamp reads 'PRO: SEP.10.2024 BB: DEC.10.2025 104331', a little past best by date.
Cloudy, deep amber colored body. Multi-finger off white colored head, and this becomes a pillow island and high ring. Leaves behind small spots and short strings of lacing.
Aroma of caramel malt, apple/peach, with a bit of molasses.
Taste is sweet, malty, and fruity. Flavors of dark bread, apple, peach, and prune. Extended aftertaste continues with the fruitcake/dark caramel bread mix.
Medium mouthfeel. Minor bitter bite, but has a fruity tanginess. Mouth coating, with a sharper finish. Very good carbonation.
May be showing some age in the can, but good mix of caramel malt, dark bread, and fruit.

16.9 oz. can poured into dimpled mug
(July 25, 2025 born-on date; Oct. 25, 2026 best-by date printed on bottom of can)

L: murky copper red, brilliant amber when held up to a light (SRM 14-15), topped by creamy thick head of offwhite/beige foam that sticks a little; keeps a thin but full collar of foam and most of a skin; mild lacing but nothing major; the red-orange color is amazing if you're into that sort of thing

S: crusty dark bread, orange, peach; as it warms it gets both fruitier and breadier at the same time, even hinting at fruitcake or a dark sweet bread

T: darker than the aroma, toasted malt, bitter/earthy almonds, nice balancing caramel sweetness from the malt — reminds me a lot of an Oktoberfest Marzen but maybe not quite that bitter/earthy

F: light and fluffy, very quaffable for a 5+% ABV brew, carbonation is mildly crisp giving it an overall silkiness that at times comes off a hint watery; I gave it a solid medium pour but might try drinking one of these straight out the can to maintain more of the carbonation ... still, the feel is good all around even after the medium pour; I would not slam this beer into the glass personally

O: very solid beer with a nice interplay between the toasted malt presence, earthiness and hints of sweetness; the aroma is a highlight, almost has a Belgium abbey ale vibe; I like it a lot and would seek it out again ... seems like every Tucher beer I've tried I've enjoyed

Pours hazy amber with a two finger off white head of foam. Nice aroma with caramel malt, bread, bananas, and brown sugar. Tsstes much like it smells with caramel, bread, bananas, brown sugar, and there are also some herbal hops that I did not pick up in the aroma. A slightly sweet bready beer with herbal hops for balance. Quite nice. Medium to full bodied with modest carbonation, A nice beer that I will gladly buy again. found this at Total Wine.

(500 ml can, 5.2% abv, pro: Sep 10 2024, bb: Dec 10 2025; purchased an hour ago at Mr. Liquor, where I've seen it on the shelf for maybe over a year... decanted into a Tubinger mug)

L: didn't quite top the glass (too much gloriusly moussy, craggy foam), the last bit out of the can was murky with sediment... clear, tawny-garnet colored liquid; aforementioned foam slowly settles down, thick and creamy... thick bands of lace

S: powerful... bit of a doppelbock-like roasty caramel overtone... bit of roasted chestnut, brown bread crust... the bready earthiness penetrates deep into the back of the nasal cavities and, I dare say, a bit into my lungs... relentless punch and depth... still going near the end, and I'm getting dried fruit notes - prune, apple, cranberry...

T: yeasty like a dunkelweizen, or some keller helles and doppelbock blend... woody, shrub-y bitterness in the aftertaste... certainly malty, but relatively dry, though some artefacts of dark caramel emerge late in the aft, overall not sweet... later a (phenolic) smoked wood note climbs atop the bitter bite... there are signs the flavor quality is past prime, natural decay

F: a subtle stinging acidic bite reminiscent of old beer... light-medium bodied, bouncy, pillowy and plush when drawn slow... smack of smoke tingling the tongue and teeth... some soft residual viscosity but otherwise cutting a clipped, dry finish

O: I don't know, the colors and aromas are confusing my senses... it doesn't taste like a dunkel lager or a bock, but perhaps closer to an Alt dosed with a little unfiltered weizenbock, but not quite?... I feel compelled to go back and buy the other 4 packs there ($9.99 each!) ... first Rotbier I've tried not under the Schlenkerla brand (2486)
