Inguer Alus "Kirsu Alus". (Cherry beer). 5.50% ABV. .5 litre brown glass bottle with ornate branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at a Rimi market in Riga, Latvia, and served into a mason jar in me friend's gaff. www.brueris.lv
Reviewed from notes taken in July 2014.
Served cold. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Five fingers wide of white colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Has a nice soft, even complexion. Frothy creamy consistency. Head retention is good - about 7 minutes.
BODY: Translucent vibrant honey-copper/gold. Nontransparent. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
Appears well-carbonated. It's not unique or special, and doesn't have the red hues I'd expect in a cherry beer, but there are no obvious flaws. I'm looking forward to trying it.
AROMA: Cherry is definitely present - a bit of tartness, a bit of cherry syrupy, some fruit - but it isn't as sour or as genuine as I'd like, and I suspect cherry extract was used rather than actual cherries. Still, it isn't as artificial as it could be. Aside from some white sugar-y sweetness, I don't pick up anything beneath the cherry veneer.
It's a pleasant albeit sweet aroma of mild strength.
TASTE: Cherry fruit. Some artificial cherry syrupy - but not as much as anticipated. Hints of tartness. Sugary sweetness. White/cane sugar is present, but without its signature cidery character. Fruity hops help complement the cherry.
Overall, it's quite simple and contained. It's a narrow flavour profile, but a fairly effective one. It captures the cherry flavour, which is the main thing anyone should ask of a cherry beer. I do like it, but it isn't real complex, layered, or subtle. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Good amplitude of flavour. Has definite focus and notable cohesion.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, lightly smacky (which complements the tartness beautifully), perfectly carbonated, medium-bodied, and refreshing as hell. It's a nice light mellow mouthfeel, and makes this brew a good choice for a hot summer day. Admittedly though, it is a bit syrupy, and slightly too thick.
Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy on the palate.
OVERALL: Very drinkable and enjoyable, albeit simple and narrow. It doesn't bring much to the table besides cherry, but then that's what really matters in a cherry beer. Sure, it's not on the level of the best beers in the style (e.g. New Glarus' offerings), but I do like it and would get it again. A surprisingly tasty treat of a cherry beer from the supermarket.
