A: Hazy pale tangerine color has a strong sense of carbonation. Huge, stone white head with a soapy foam consistency that stands three inches tall. Spotty, spacious lace patches. The haziness factor was a dim contributor at best.

S: Peaches and pine resins on the nose with some sugary grapefruit. Tropical notes of pineapple are backed with some grain juice sweetness. Good strength delivery with fresh barley grains as a backing that is crisp and dry.

T: Fresh pineapple and peaches for flavor is quickly followed by a burst of sticky pine-citrus resins. Tart oranges and dry barley mix well with some stalky hop vines.

M: Medium build, lots of crisp carbonation, a fizzy and foamy hold on the tongue from the co2 activity. Tarty, lightly dry with a light grainy dusting.

O: Overall an good everyday drinking ipa. Packs a fair amount of ibus for backyard gatherings. Its not rocket science, but a decent everyday ipa drinker. Per style and other examples from brewery, it falls short in comparison and seems to be just a place holder/new beer to try.

10/17/20... clear light gold, foam,y, top resting at a thin layer eroded at the center. Citrus forward nose. Simple and open. Juicy lemon and citrus fruit burst. Slight tart. Subtle bitter holds all in check. Wow, really good.

NE pale ale? Session NEIPA? Whatever, it's lower strength at 5.5% and damn tasty. Haze is light, if you care about that. Mildly dry bitter finish, not as thick as many NEIPAs. Still satisfying, just more drinkable. Plenty of fruit up front with fresh mango leading followed by a dusting of floral herbal hoppiness.

12oz can into a pint glass. Canned 6/9/20, so almost 4 months old.

Looks good in the glass. Actual hazy rather than murky yellow body, with a few tinges of orange. Small white head shrinks to a ring, no lacing.

Slightly floral aroma with a hint of lemon.

On tasting, hop profile is diminished, but still present. A touch of lemon, and a little sweetness.

Mouth is just about medium, finish is dry, but also makes the mouth water.

Overall, even with a bit of age on it, still an okay drink.

12oz can. Poured out a slightly cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It left thin trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of orange peel, grapefruit, mango and toasted caramel. Sweet tropical fruit taste with a sharp bitterness and sweet caramel backbone.

Pours a hazy and very light straw color with a finger of head. The nose has an overly subtle aroma of citrus. The flavor is slightly citrusy and slightly hoppy. The body is light even for the style.

Everything about this beer screams lack of excess.

It’s a fine beer. It really is. Though it’s like dating a girl that’s a twin: the other one is wild and crazy and full of reckless abandon; while Sadie, well, she’s a bit more dainty and soft around the edges. And that’s what we have here in this ok offering from Surly: she’s still hot, but a bit boring.

See ya!

FEEL: very easy drinking, above average carbonation. light body.

Good Summer beer, lacking in depth of flavors.

Drinkable and enjoyable but far from Surly's best work, and it doesn't help that it's in what is probably the most oversaturated style.

Rocket Surgery pours a hazy bright golden color, with not too much head. Big aroma, juicy, lots of tropical fruits. Flavor is also juicy, tropical fruit, with a bittering finish. Good feel, just the slightest bit watery, but still above average. Overall, nice no frills NEIPA, a bit on the bitter side in comparison to others, and very easy to drink.

A- 12oz can pours into a tall chalice with a slightly hazy yellow body and a one finger frothy white head. Fairly good head retention and a very wide and thick ring at the edges sticks around for a while. Large sheets of lacing at the top and drizzled webs are plentiful beneath that.

S- Fruity hops dominate the aroma and this one brings the juice factor even for 5.5%. Most notably are the passionfruit and mango which lead off things very nicely. Notes of melon, floral, grapefruit, tangerine, peach and cantaloupe from the hops. Mostly hops and the tiniest bit of pale grains.

T- Still fruity here but not as clean and pungent as the aroma was and for whatever reason it has that homebrew hop flavor where the hops don't feel fully balanced out or something. Still some nice notes of tangerine, peach, grapefruit, mango and creamsicle. Light sweetness as well as crackery grain hints.

MF- Light bodied and just a bit thin on the whole. The bubbles come down at a medium level and it has a very light bitterness in the finish.

Nice aroma but the hops are a bit subdued in the flavor and the body comes off a bit thin.

12 ounce can - $3.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

CANNED ON: 03/24/20.

Appearance: Pleasantly, responsibly hazy, light yellow-orange in color with an inch of soft-looking, white foam.

Smell: Citrusy, lightly tropical aroma with white grapefruit and a snap of tangerine aided by pineapple and a thin sliver of mango. Modest maltiness with a subtle showing of rustic raw grains.

Taste: Light-leaning malt profile, a nibble of humble cracker with the merest kiss of sweetness. It quickly dries out, with measured citrus fruits backed by lesser tropical notes and a nice awakening acidity. Tiny bit of biting rind. Bitterness, overall, feels really mellow. Ultra faint oat creaminess felt on the swallow.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Well, it's certainly quite drinkable and altogether light (even in ABV). I appreciate its cleanness -- nothing chalky, gritty, muddy or murky, here.

Pull back a little on the hops, overpay for the aromatic hops, and wallah! Everything is a hazy IPA. And as Surly Brewing demonstrates, its not exactly rocket surgery.

But it is! Rocket Surgery pours a fairly standard, hop hazed translucence with a glowing golden amber appearance. Crowned with a frothy eggshell cap, the beer draws in the nose with the allure of citronella, herb, tropical fruit and an overall fresh grassiness. As the malt sweetness strikes first, a glimpse of honey, caramel and shortcake lays a thin foundation of grain sweetness on the tongue.

A quick followup of hops reveal a radiant orange, grapefruit and mango medley; each seemingly of the slightly under ripened variety. Trending herbal, bitter and pleasantly vegetal, its the fruit peels that make the most splash on the middle palate as the beer trends malty-dry, crisply bitter and sharper than the usual "hazy" IPA.

Medium bodied and staying on a bitter and drying course, the IPA finishes with verbena, citrus peel and a sprucy bite, trying to split the difference between true New England styled varieties and their more comforting American IPA types. A medium long linger of caramelized herb, hemp and tea linger crisply on the after palate.

I got a can of this beer from a beer store in La Crosse, WI whilst there to bring my daughter home early from college......thanks alot Covid 19. Anyhow....the beer poured a hazy yellow with white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had bitter ripe fruit notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with bitter fruit presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a decent beer.

Not a bad hazy pale ale, this should not be classified as an ipa.

Poured from a can into a nonic pint glass.

Pours light hazy, but not cloudy, gold with a fabulous bone-white foamy head. The retention is so-so, but the lacing is solid and soapy.

The aromas are simple citrus--white grapefruit and lemon--followed by hints of tropical (pineapple and mango).

Ultimately an APA, not an IPA, on the tongue, but the hops are a little strong for the style. Restrained malt honey and graham sweetness on the tip of the tongue, herbal and grassy hops mixed with cracker in midstream, and very measured earth on the finish. Fairly well balanced, it nevertheless ends up tasting a bit like an APA that is trying to appeal to the hop-head crowd..

The brew is medium bodied and wants for a bit more carbonation. But it is very drinkable nonetheless.

Overall, a solid APA that could use a shade more carbonation and a touch less hops.

This one's being billed as a "hazy ale", not an IPA, but not a pale ale, either. So, that means that it is a pale ale. Because no brewery would miss an opportunity to label a beer an IPA, and pale ale has lost it's luster. The fact is, beer drinkers want pale ales, even if they don't know it.

All hazed up. Bright golden golden, ample layer of ivory froth.

In the nose: Citrus hops. Grapefruit and lemon. Encroaching sweetness.

In the mouth: Mild bitterness at first. Juiciness on the palate, plenty of hops delivered on the tongue. Bright and delightful. Medium bodied, easy drinking. This one is tasty, and fuzzy, and in the hallowed tradition of hazy, but lighter and lower alcohol. So, go drink it.

From a 12oz can:

Appearance: Hazy yellow, good head.

Smell: Danky aroma.

Taste: Moderate bitterness, mostly balanced citrus flavor.

Overall: Another from Surly's hop pack. At least it doesn't taste like orange juice, which is my main issue with haze bombs. Still has some balance and bitterness, pretty solid.

After having Dots & Loops a couple nights ago, I firmly believe Surly should give up on NE IPAs. But hey, this came in the mix pack, so here we go. 12 oz. can.

At least this one looks right, though melony, not juicy. The nose brings a mix of melon & pineapple that I approve of.

Rocket Surgery isn’t as objectionable as D&L, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, or Jar Jar Binks. It’s just kind of routine. They hit the juicy mark at least, with the aforementioned melon, pineapple, oranges, & citrus, plus a sliver of bitterness on the finish. Grainy & rough. Certainly not tough to drink.

Surly – stick to lagers, West Coast IPAs, & big stouts, or hire somebody from Trillium if you want to get in this game. A pretty good effort, but not up to the standards of an elite brewery like Surly.
