The summer sun hits different where we’re from. The warm rays are the hard-earned reward for our brutal winters, and we cherish them just a little bit more. Surly salutes those Invisible Rays with this tropical IPA full of pineapple and guava notes and just a kiss of lactose. Summer isn’t endless here, but you’ll wish this beer was.

I got a can of this beer off the single shelf from a beer store in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. It poured a hazy golden with white head that is leaving some lace. The scent had pineapple notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with tropical fruit medley that was spearheaded by pineapple and apricot. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

Appearance: Pours a medium, clear, slightly vibrant orange color with mildly bubbling body, and frothy white head. SRM of 9. (3.75)

Aroma: Strong aromas of mandarin orange, tropical orange, pineapple, strawberry, peach, with some tropical guava and mango underneath. An OJ citrus, and pulp finish. (4.00)

Flavor: Strong and juicy flavors upfront of tropical orange, guava, passionfruit, pineapple, mango. Mostly tropical orange though with an abundance of juiciness without being hazy. Juicy with only a mild bitterness on the end. Has a juicy, but also a smooth and slightly creamy finish, likely from the lactose and oat malt. The lactose is hidden perfectly. (4.25

Feel: Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Juicy in the middle. Alcohol is hidden well. A juicy and moderate bodied finish. No hop burn here. Tropical citrus lingers on the palate. (4.25)

Compared to New Belgium V2K IPA 8/22/21: Pours a much darker orange and clearer color. More tropical and mandarin orange. More pineapple and citrus. Less tropical guava, cherry, and fruit punch.

Compared to Lagunitas Super Cluster IPA 9/17/21: Pours a similar color. More citrus, orange juice, strawberry. Less resinous mandarin orange and mango. Similar sweetness, but lighter. Overall, quite similar.

Compared to Insight Brewing Double Dry-hopped NEIPA 9/24/21: Pours a darker and clearer color. More resinous orange and tropical pineapple and fruit. Less orange and lemon pithy citrus and juice.

Compared to Terrapin Luau Krunkles 11/1/21: Pours a similar color. More juicy orange and pineapple. Less resinous guava and passionfruit. More hazy and juicy.

Compared to 3 Floyd's Barbarian Haze IPA 1/14/22: Pours slightly darker. Stronger aromas. More resinous peach, orange, strawberry. Less orange citrus, flower, and pineapple.

Overall: A very tasty and juicy IPA here. Surprisingly I don't even know if you would call this a NEIPA. It's not hazy, yet extremely juicy. Tons of OJ. Has more of a body from the lactose and oats than some other NEIPAs. Sort of reminds me of Lagunitas Super Cluster IPA. Juicy, sweet, but not really hazy. It's like a Florida orange on a summer sunny day. I think the name describes it well. Definitely enjoyed this one and quite a fantastic IPA. (Final Rating: 4.16)
