Shutter Shades pours a dark amber color with no head. Dank resin aroma. The flavor is dank, with resin notes and some hints of pine. Good feel. Overall, it's a strong, classic big IPA.

Poured into a nonic.
Pours a slightly hazed orange/gold with a nice white fluffy head. A pretty nice looking brew, especially with a higher ABV.
Aromas are a little elusive, but orange, pineapple, peach, and a bit of cherry are all there. As the brew warms, some estery Juicy Fruit gum aromas manifest.
The brew is similar on the nose. The flavors are a little mashed together, but not muddled. Citrus, pineapple and peach are the main stars, but as the brew warms and develops, cherry and estery gums arrive. The finish provides just a touch of resin and a hint of boozy burn.
At least medium bodied. Smooth and slick. Not sticky, however.
Not spectacular, but definitely a little different from the safe almost formulaic IPAs Surly has been kicking out. Every time I start worrying Surly is heading for "check the box" territory, they do something a little different. The cherry and Juicy Fruit notes of this one are tricky.

Caned 7/25/22 (3 months ago)
Appearance: Pours a clear, rich and bright orange color with a mild white head. SRM of 9. (3.75)
Aroma: Strong aromas of orange, tangerine, nectarine, grapefruit with some resinous tropical papaya and pineapple underlying. (3.75)
Flavor: Moderate flavors of orange citrus, grapefruit citrus, mango, melon. Some tropical black cherry notes. Evolves into a mix of cherry, caramel and pine bitterness off the end. (3.50)
Feel: Medium to heavier bodied. Moderate carbonation. Leans sweet, mildly bitter. (3.50)
Compared to Third Space Unbridled Enthusiasm 11/2022: Pours similar, milder head. Stronger aromas. More sweet malt and black cherry. Less juicy tropical notes and pine. Winner: Third Space
Overall: An okay IPA here. A little too high ABV for my liking. Drinks sort of stickily sweet. A little bit of black cherry and pine bitterness. I'd say it's pretty average at best. Granted I'm not much a fan of DIPAs. (Rating: 3.58)

From a 12oz can:
Appearance: Hazy gold, ok head.
Smell: Big whiff of bubblegum then a more modest citrus aroma.
Taste: Moderately sweet, then the bubblegum and a light tropical fruitiness. Mild to moderate bitterness in the finish.
Overall: Interesting bubblegum smell and flavor to this new DDH DIPA from Surly. Not as much bitterness as I was expecting, but I still enjoyed it. Worth a try.

12oz can. Poured out a slightly cloudy, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of pineapple, guava, orange peel and toasted caramel. Strong tropical fruit taste with toasted caramel and a sharp, piney bitterness.
