Appearance: Hazy, muddy brown with a trace of head.

Smell: Soured red grapes and oaken wood.

Taste: Spiced honey mead with heaps of sourness, not unlike unripe plums and sour red grapes. I'm not detecting any malt, barley or any sort of beer to speak of.

Mouthfeel: Karo Syrup.

Drinkability: It's quite sour and a little sickly sweet. Mead, Yes? The only time I'd be in the mood for a wine-mead would be if I was bleeding and thirsty after battling barbarian hordes. = never; xbox doesn't count.

Draft at Autumn Brew Review. Dark brown slightly murky pour with minimal head. Sour smell with dark fruit notes along with the oak from the barrel. Some vinegar type notes as well. Medium mouthfeel. Sort of like drinking a mix between a mead and a beer. The taste is rather sweet with notes of plum, dark fruit, and oak. The wine barrels really come through. All in all a very interesting beer that doesn't dissappoint.

Review #1200 Had this at the Haute Dish

Served in a huge founders snifter with a light layer of fizzy tan head. Color is fairly black.

Aroma: Lots of honey, red grapes, very wine like. The pinot barrels show heavily in a good way. Has oak flavors, plums/prunes, and is fairly rich. Dates, figs, and brown sugar also show as it warms. Awesome.

Taste: Wow, very wine-like and mead-like. A large amount of honey. Big spice profile. Vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and molasses. Then I get some red grapes, plums, blackberries, and oak. This beer is money.

Mouthfeel: Sweet and syrupy. Smooth and refreshing. Very clean beer. Medium to full bodied with a lower amount of carbonation, but it works. Ends clean with more honey.

Overall, a phenomenal beer. One of surly's best beers. It was like a mead and wine mixed together. This is very drinkable, especially for the abv. The barrel aging really took this beer over the edge. Wow.
