From a 12oz can:

Appearance: Clear dark ruby, good head.

Smell: Nice roastiness, then fruity.

Taste: Slow arrival, not immediately sweet, bitter, or roasty. Dark fruits surrounded by a roasty flavor mixed with some mocha notes. Medium-heavy feel.

Overall: A tasty big porter, Surly can and has made a lot of good non-IPA beers (even post-Todd)! A slow-building treat, nice mix of dark fruits and roasted malts.

12oz can from a variety pk canned 10/11/22 into a nonic pint glass.
L: Pours transparent deep red/brown mahogany caramel w a fizzy 1" cola-like khaki head w OK retention down to a skin, low fine carbo, some light clingy lacing, good fine carbo to end.
S: Light coffee, dark chocolate, char, caramelized malts, brown bread, dates, molasses, lightly fruity.
T: Well caramelized malts, toasted grains, light chocolate, lightly metallic momentarily, a hint of raisins, dates, plum, subtle citrus, dark honey, brown bread.
F: Smooth med-to med-light bodied feel w a med-full center and a med-fast non-drying finish.
O: Very EZ drinking. In fact, impressive drinkability and great tasting. No hints of alcohol, toasty, chocolaty, smooth & clean. It is perhaps on the lighter side of the style and is well balanced, simple and excellent.

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark brown, nearly black, color with a strong tan head. SRM of 21. (4.00)

Aroma: Strong aromas of coca, dark grains, airy coffee roast, light vanilla. (4.00)

Flavor: Moderate flavors of dark grains, airy roast, dusty cocoa, black bread crust, dark malt and some floral yeast. Drinks dry. (4.25)

Feel: Medium-bodied, strong carbonation and dry, clean mouthfeel. Very dry. (4.50)

Compared to Lakefront Baltic Fire 1/6/2023: Pours lighter, milder aromas. More cocoa, dark, airy grains and roast. Less vanilla and smooth chocolate. Dryer and cleaner.

Compared to Anchor Steam Porter 1/7/2023: Pours lighter, milder aromas. More dried roast, dark grain, and black bread crust. Less chocolate, dark malt, and cream. Dryer and cleaner.

Compared to Einstok Icelandic Porter 1/7/2023: Pours lighter, milder aromas. More dried roast, dark grain, and black bread crust. Less chocolate, dark malt, and cream. Dryer and cleaner.

Compared to Oliphant Nose Hozzle 2/2023: Pours lighter. More dark grains, caramel, complex malt flavors. Less dark chocolate, espresso, bitter roast.

Compared to 3 Sheeps 15-2 3/2023: Pours lighter, lighter head. Milder aromas. More dry chocolate, cocoa, floral notes. Less dark chocolate, coffee roast, cherry. Dryer and cleaner.

Overall: A surprisingly good Baltic Porter here. Not even sure if it's a Baltic Porter, but great flavors of chocolate and dry roast, dark grains, black bread crust, airy roast. Nice grainy and yeast flavors. Complex malt flavors with some floral notes. Similar to some yeast flavors in other Surly beers. Possibly reminiscent of their Scrillionairre. Surly nailed this one. Sad I can only buy it in a mix box.. (Rating: 4.24)

Pours a clear dark brown with a thin tan cap that disappears quickly leaving scattered lacing. Aroma is roasted malt. Flavor is slightly sweet, roasted malt with a whisp of smoke. Feel is medium bodied with decent carbonation. Overall, just okay.
