Surly Brewing and Peace Coffee came up together in Minneapolis. Both brands were at the forefront of the coffee and craft beer renaissance of the past twenty years, and now our paths finally cross with House Blend Nitro Coffee Ale. A shared dedication to our local community and product excellence comes through in every rich, roasty sip, smoothed out on nitro with creamy notes of burnt sugar, vanilla, and toffee.

Nitro Coffee Ale pours a very dark brown, with a larger, long-lasting tan head. The aroma is rich, creamy, cold-press coffee. The flavor is cold-pressed coffee. A bit flat and watery feel. Overall, it's coffee.

Poured from pint can into imperial pint glass. Canned on 10/24/23.
A: Pours black with a little light coming through with backlighting. Nice 1-2 inch foamy tan head with excellent retention.
S: Lovely dark roast coffee with cream. Hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, and char.
T: Follows aroma pretty closely. Nice dark roast coffee with heavy cream. Dark chocolate, vanilla, and caramel in the background.
M: Medium body. Very creamy and soft feel. Nearly chewy. A couple layers of dark sweetness.
D: The coffee note is excellent and true to what you would expect from Peace Coffee. Not complex, but well done for what it is.

It doesn't specify whether this is actually a porter or stout but it's definitely at least one of them. Black body, no or minimal carbonation, brief white creamy beige head. It's pretty decent but pretty standard as far as both nitro porters or stouts go. Roasted malts are there, a little bit of molasses, brown sugar, etc. The coffee is there but a bit more on the minimal side.

I wanted to like this because the can looks good, it looks good poured, it feels good drinking it - but the flavor is literally weak French press dregs of grocery store coffee + sweetener. The scent should have told me this but the other factors were strong enough that I was compelled to drink it, but I would not be able to drink another can of this in my life.

Hardly any carbonation when I poured it, but had a deep dark black color.
Smell is all the best parts of a coffee, but it overpowers other components. I kind of love it, but I think a lot of “true” beer lovers may not.
Taste is a cold brew coffee with a hint of roasted malts of a stout.
Feel is lightly thick and somewhat smooth, but really lacks any carbonation at all.
Overall, I think this could have been a really good beer, but the lack of carbonation really took away from it.

16oz canned 01/26/24 poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 5.5 % ABV. The beer pours dense black with meager tan colored head. The head starts and finishes as an 1/8" even layer. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring dark roast, unsweetened cold brew coffee. The taste is more of the same rich coffee flavors sans sweetness and with minimal hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is thin bodied with nearly still, non widget, nitro. Overall, a tasty porter if you love black coffee, which I do.

Creamy, smooth, a hint of coffee. Not sure I'd choose this over a normal Guinness or Coffee Bender though.

Bought a single to try it and I’m guessing it was a little long in the tooth. The great thing about Nitro beer is that lovely cascade of tiny carbonation bubbles and this simply didn’t have any.
That said, the taste is quite good, almost sweet but not really. Lots of coffee and some cacao and dark fruit, the coffee trumps the other flavors but not in a bad way.
The feel is typically nitro, so some of that still resides in there.
OA, it’s a better than average coffee stout, may need to pick up a 6 pack.

From a 16oz can canned on 11/13/23
I get a nitro hiss when I opened this can up. This is a black pouring beer. I really like how the bubbles rise in the glass after pouring. The head is tan colored and 1 finger. The head looks very still almost, and is very long lasting. Very creamy looking head with very tiny bubbles.
Woah, the coffee is rich and off the charts here. Very roasty and full smelling.
Taste - This is a very creamy tasting beer up front from the nitro in it. Very smooth and creamy tasting. The coffee starts out almost sweet, but then goes into a roasty flavor and somewhat bitter on the back side.
Soft, creamy and smooth feeling. Pretty full feeling overall.
This is intereting and tasty overall.

From a 16oz can:
Appearance: Dark brown, cascading nitro morphs into a solid foam cap. Nice ruby color when held to light.
Smell: Black coffee, ashes.
Taste: A little roasted sweetness and light mocha to start. Light body. Finishes with a burnt black coffee note and ash.
Overall: I really liked Bender and Coffee Bender was fine, but I'm not a big coffee guy. The coffee in this one just straight out reminds me of a dingy diner with somebody ilicitly smoking cigarettes in the corner. The beer is fine, just gives me a weird mental image.
