Thornbridge Barrel Room Series - 2020
Gin Barrel Aged Saison
Mind Games is a collaboration between Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker and Rob Lovatt of Thornbridge Brewery. Matt and Rob travelled to Bordeaux in search of something unique and returned with some recently emptied gin barrels. They then brewed a classic saison-style beer, using three different yeast strains and the finest Savinskji Goldings, which was then aged in these gin barrels for eight months. The result is a wonderfully effervescent golden saison with impressions of lemon and juniper.

375 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 8.5%. Hazy and very pale straw colour, large white head. Pleasant aroma of oak and dry white wine, a hint of gin and juniper berries. The flavour is a bit too sweet for a saison, but has distinct notes of oak, gin, juniper berries and spicy saison yeast. Moderate hops in the finish.

375ml bottle.
L: Slight haze, gold colour, clouds of microbubbles and a head that collapses to a cap.
S: Oaked chardonnay with a hint of vinegar and a touch of sweetness.
T: So much going on. There’s white wine vinegar, pear drops, almonds, lemon peel, juniper and oak.
F: Somehow both rich and tart at the same time. Very full-bodied for a saison with a foaming mouthfeel.
O: A luxurious, complex, heady saison that manages to also be approachable and refreshing. Extraordinary.
