We first brewed our Burton Ale with Kernel brewery back in the summer of 2011, inspired by historical brewing recipes from the early 20th Century. This iteration, fermented on our union system, is malty, rich and dark with a gentle balancing bitterness from the Golding hops. Roasted malts and special brewing sugars make our Burton Ale the perfect winter warmer.

Malts: Low Colour Maris Otter, Crystal, Munich, Black.
Hops: Goldings.

Bottle conditioned. Collaboration with The Kernel. Almost clear chestnut colour. Some yeast leakage has occurred. Thick billowy head.
Malt and marmalade in the aroma. Hints of hedgerow fruits apparent.
A malty, earthy flavour with the berry fruits are wonderfully balanced.
Medium to full bodied. A bitter/dry finish. The alcohol gives a pleasant boozy, warming feel.
Is this just a well brewed ale or did the union provide it's part. Either wise it's a lovely renaissance.

500ml brown glass bottle.
L: Crystal clear (after a careful pour), mahogany colour with a thin, off-white head that reduces to a cap and arcs of lacing. Beautiful colour.
S: Red fruit & sweet malt.
T: Rich and malty. Orchard fruits & berries. Sweet, alcoholic, warming finish.
F: Medium body, rich mouthfeel, foaming carbonation, super smooth, dry finish.
O: A lovely winter warmer in an historic English style (Burton Ale) that reached peak popularity in the 1950s but had all but disappeared by 1971. Well done to Thornbridge and Kernel for reviving it. Well worth a try if you’re a fan of traditional English cask beers.

The historic Burton union system was recently decommissioned by Carlsberg Marston’s. Thornbridge successfully salvaged a part of the system and used it for this brew. Well worth googling “burton union system”. A unique way of brewing beer. Will definitely be trying other beers Thornbridge produce on the system.
