I think the way to review this beer is as a marketing concept. Sainsbury is usually the U.K.'s second largest grocery store and has distribution power. Marston's knows how to brew for the masses and supervise smaller brewers that it has bought over the years. Marston's finds this talented brewer, Jennings. They discuss playing-on the U.K.s romance with the Lake District by painting a boat on a lake, pull-out of the vault a refreshing recipe for a bitter and call it Westmoreland.
I also happen to like this ale. I don't spend lots of time drinking bitters, but I enjoyed this one. Simple and sessionable. And I can tell why Sainsbury thinks it can be sold for a long time.

Bottled
Pours a golden body with decent enough white head
Aroma off caramel, grass and peppery hops. Light sweet , light bitter taste. A bit lacking in flavour. Not bad though.

500ml Bottle: BBD 30 Nov 2013, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 4 Sep 2013.
Orange hue to the amber body, on top a full white head of tight foam.
The nose was both floral and malty, biscuity malts with spicy flowers.
Taste wise it leads with a light malt flavour and finishes with a hop mini-bitter feel.
Fairly crisp body and well carbonated, all in all, not a bad supermarket beer.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2013. Picked up from Sainsbury's a while back. I like the retro label - it reminds me of old British Rail posters.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A rich amber colour with light sediment and plentiful carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a while before settling as a surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of bread, grain, fruity ale yeast and stewed leaves.
Tastes of caramel malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of breadiness, mild grain, faint toffee, fruity yeast esters and stewed leaves. Slightly harsh, accompanied by a hint of cardboard in the background. A herbal bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with decent carbonation and a fairly insubstantial body. Rather astringent, followed by an aftertaste of acrid stewed leaves and mild caramel malt.
Meh - a pretty average bitter that doesn't set itself apart from the crowd. Looks quite nice, but the aroma/flavour are uninspiring. Insipid body. Nothing technically wrong with it, but it's boring. No need to seek it out.
