No carb, slighty murky and jet black.

Sweet fruits and cereal malt in the nose. Pricky & spicy hops, some charcoal malt, yeast and alcohol hints

Good malty thick mouthfeel, plenty of prunes and dried fruit balanced well with spicy bittering hops and a warming alcohol presence.

Good stuff.

500ml bottle served into a pint glass

Look: Compared with a typical Belgian saison this is dark - in fact, it looks more like a slightly hazy English bitter with added sediment and floaty bits. Ivory white head with good retention leaving behind some lacing.

Smell: It has a slight saison funkiness but it's predominantly malt with a fair hint of dark fruits. The ingredient list mentions curacao orange and grains of Paradise so you'd expect a certain degree of fruitness with some gingery pepperiness but there's not much in the way of the former and I didn't notice anyt of the latter at all. Hops? Not much.

Taste: Much like it tastes - toasted malts and caramel are dominant with some muted fruit flavours and a lingering, astringent bitterness. Overall, though, there's not really a lot going on and it really doesn't compare well with other saisons I've had.

Feel: Thick, slightly cloying - pretty hard work.

Overall: Not my thing, sorry - I like Belgian saisons a lot, but if that's what this is trying to be then, sadly, it has failed miserably. It looks and feels a bit like a brown ale, and tastes like one too, but none of the attributes that you'd associated with a saison are there. Since it's a bottle conditioned beer maybe it'll benefit from some judicious aging but as it's stands it's pretty dull.

Root beerish amber brown, a sort of dubbely color, with an ivory head. Toasted marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, pecan pie, bubblegum, oolong tea, and light chocolate notes bounce around in the nose, but on the palate little of this nuance registers. It is mostly nutty and toasty with malts with pineapple fruitiness and a mild vinous quality, but it is generally not interesting enough, and too cloying. It's not bad, but it feels vague and unfocused - I expected the full, roasty richness of a brown ale or porter combined with the funky complexity and effervescence of a saison, but it delivers neither.
