Ordered this on cask at the brew pub. Was a little concerned when I saw the pour, but it settled out nicely. Lovely deep brown approaching black with nice clarity. Well formed head with thick malted milk looking froth.

Aroma is predominantly of fruit & estery yeast and orchard must. Malt is not assertive.

Taste is dominated by a hot, musty yeast flavor as if the previous cask had been a trappist, or maybe the machine needed cleaning. Finally after the funk goes away there is a slight bit of roasted malt.

The ale was served at the right temp - always nice. But the flavor was severely off. But good in its own way. But in a way I don't expect most people would like.

Tasted on-tap 06/04/07 at the Lucky Labrador Bewpub in Portland, OR.

Pitch black in color with a low brown head. Sweet malt dominates across the board with some lactose aroma and flavor. Rich and robust but a bit too sweet in my book even considering the 50 IBUs noted on the website. Medium-full bodied and creamy.

A bit too sweet for me... the sweetness overpowers any roastiness that is present.

From notes. On tap at brewery. Black, frothy tan head stays for the duration. Active, lots of lacing. SMELL is not too much. Sweet malty, bit of roastiness. TASTE very balanced, not super complex. Medium roasty, malty sweet, clean finish. FEEL creamy, medium body, smooth. OVERALL very solid, drinkable stout. Unexceptional, but no flaws, save for the weak nose.

Served at the Multnomah Village Lucky Lab, it was black with deep ruby accents peeking through at the edges of the glass. Head was espresso-foam colored. Its aroma contained sweet roasty malts, an undefined hoppy character, and some alcohol. It tasted of dark chocolate, with a roasty malt profile, and was rounded out nicely with a standard bitterness. A zingy bitter twang lingered on the palate long after a sip was taken. The mouthfeel was full and smooth enough to hold up the flavors nicely. A good example of a full flavored sweetish stout.

On-tap pint at Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne, Portland.

A: Jet black with slight brownish tints at the edges of the pint. A creamy 1/2 finger head, with equally creamy lacing.

S: Hints of toasted caramel malt with a slight cocoa/milk chocolate sweetness. No distingishable hops in aroma.

T: Chocolate with an espresso bean-like bitter finish. As it warms, there are bits of caramel sweetness and roasted malt revealed. I also picked up a faint fruitiness, like tart raspberries.

M: Medium mouthfeel. Full flavor, with a lingering bittersweet finish. Some carbonation gives it a mild prickliness, though the mouthfeel leans mostly toward creaminess.

D: A nice, flavorful & balanced stout. A good sipper, great for enjoying year-round.

One of few times I left a brewery with something other than the IPA. They were out, but this was a stellar stout.

The aromas are subdued but pleasantly so, hinting at the bitter chocolate which is so abundantly delivered to the palate upon tasting. It is sweetish, creamy, and opaque, with a dry finish and sensible aftertaste. The mouthfeel of the cask-conditioned draught is positively serene. A delectable treasure.

This is an extremely satisfying export-style stout worthy of leisurely, contemplative consumption. It is unlikely that the subtleties of the cask-conditioned Lucky Lab Stout will ever manifest themselves in a bottle, (available to go at the bar) but they are quite profound at the pub.

First off, thanks to cmaruschak for the chance to sample this West Coast goodie...He was kind enough to split this one with me.

Appearance: Midnight black with coffee edges. A thin tan carbonated cap forms and retains pretty nicely.

Smell: Dark ripe fruits, pretty vinous, some flaked barley, and light coffee notes cascade out of the glass.

Taste: Dry cocoa, espresso, powdered sugar, raisins, maple, and some slight oatmeal that crops up here and there. Very complex and spot on for the style. Very deep and complex with notes of sweetness and dry coffee bitterness that keep fighting for control.

Mouthfeel: Medium and creamy...coats the palate nicely.

Drinkability: Perfect for a cold, rainy day. This is an excellent example and a treat to savor. Thanks again cmaruschak!

This was a hilite of the beers at Lucky Lab. It was a very roasty, fill out your mouth stout. Not very creamy, but a malty roast that I really enjoyed. It was a bit heavy, in a good way. I like beers like this when I am in a more solemn drinking mood. The robust flavor and fullness slow me down, and I then enjoy the various flavors that are hidden a bit deeper in the beer. At times, after finding the obvious roasty hints of coffee, I caught wisps of peat moss, or maybe a earthy port. I wasn't quite sure, but I sure liked it.
