I'm sure I tried this beer on one of my many visits to the brewery. Don't remember any specifics about it though. Up until yesterday hadn't been there for about 7 years.

Had this at the Public House. I think it might have said somewhere that it was organic, but I'm not sure about that. Definitely some of the other Lucky Lab brews are organic.

The beer came happily in a 20oz imperial pint. Clear, golden and light amber colored. Head faded quickly.

Citrus, mostly lemon dominates the smells, but is accented by sweet malts.

Taste got more malty, sweet and almost bready. Strong malts for an IPA. Kind of too much for the lemony hops, which are still present but leave little bitterness. I checked the website, which listed the Dog Day IPA at 62 IBUs. Funny, I just didn't notice much of it.

Body seemed medium to full for me. Somehow the doughy taste went well with the full body. Balanced? I'm not sure. Not the right balance for my taste in IPAs, but somehow it works. If you like ambers, it might be a little more accessible than some IPAs.

Different than other IPA's I've had. A bit of a fruity taste inbetween the hops and the bitters. Goes down smooth with a great aftertaste. Good pour with just a slight head that goes away except for a resilient cover that improves its appearance. Rolls nicely on the tongue with the slight bitter aftertaste of a good IPA.

I’ve had Dog Day several times on draught and my estimation of the beer is that it desperately wants to be cask-conditioned. Its profile is entirely English traditional with dull, flat bittering derived from Fuggles and Northern Brewer hops, and no hop aroma at all. It is clouded rust-orange with a faint apple-ish smell and large sudsy bubbles that resemble a cask pour. This is not a hop showcase beer and bears little resemblance to its northwestern IPA neighbors.

As a draught beer Dog Day’s sensibilities seem restrained and would almost certainly be enhanced by some quality time spent with real wood. In my opinion, this would accent the beer’s innate subtleties and achieve its greater potential as a nuanced expression of old-world tradition. I look forward to the occasion of sampling Dog Day in cask-conditioned form. Meanwhile, its demure nature is highlighted by weeping lace and warm, radiant color.

On tap at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village. Funny how the color of my Dog Day was different than described in the previous review, which was several months earlier...different batch/tweaked recipe? My Dog Day came to me as a beautiful beaming golden beacon, deep and powerful in color, which was accentuated by the bigh white head. Excellent. The smell was too mild though... a soft floral hop bouquet. OK. The taste was good and quite peppy, with a zingy citrusy and floral bitterness that dances around the palate. Its mouthfeel was full and satisfying. An lively and overall well-done IPA.

I remember this as being better...

The beer was a rich straw, almost coppor color with a dense head. The aroma was somewhat casual, slightly grassy. The taste was somewhat stale and sallow, and the hops were no longer contributing to the flavor. It was still a decent beer, but maybe a little long in the tooth. Much more like a British IPA.
