This looks a bit too dark for a saison and the aroma/taste are too spicy. Definitely not the doing of the Belgian yeast alone, as there may be some actual spices added. Despite the heavy dose of spice, this is a beer that goes down nicely.

Draught in Philly location: This one pours a surprisingly darker color than a typical saison. It was a clear, darker amber color. There was also a fair amount of an off-white head on it that left some lacing. It had a lighter peppery, wheat and malty aroma. This has a very nice taste. Some clove and peppery notes, a slight malt sweetness, faint fruits. A nice brew.

From 12/12/10 notes. Had on tap at the Philly brewpub; this beer definitely is not retired.

a - Pours a nice golden color with a hint of orange, one inch of white head, and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of floral hops, spices, fruity malts, and yeast.

t - Tastes of floral hops, wheat, yeast, and light fruit and spice.

m - Light body and low to moderate carbonation.

d - The best beer I tried at the brewpub; a very well done saison. It smells very floral and wonderful, would certainly order again.

Served chilled in a pint glass at the brewpub in Princeton this one shows a light cloudy amber color with a modest but full white cover and decent lace. The aroma is clove wheat and apple. Wholesome and good. The first mouthful is medium bodied for the style and it generally models the aroma in flavor with a tad more citrus hop-like character I pick up on the edges. It's refreshing and plenty drinkable if you are a fan of the clove/European family. It isn't terribly complex yet it's pleasantly subtle. Worth a try and one I would drink again.

Enjoyed this on a recent trip to Triumph Brewing Company. In all I had 3 different beers and this was my favorite. It was true to the saison style although missing some of the yeast and other goodness that you typically get when you buy a bottled saison. After tasting two different brews I came back to the saison to finish of my night.

It pours a golden orange, or an orange gold, or maybe even gold with a blush of amber, but also with a touch of haze. A full finger of tight white head sustains a bit before it dwindles slowly. Rays of lacing enlighten the inside of the glass.

In the aroma, a light berry malt sweetness joins an equally mellow wheaty tang. Soft estery fronds of clove and mild feathers of hop spice wave lazily in the breeze. A distant hint of citrus teases.

Upon tasting, the malt delivers a pale fruitiness that joins the muted tanginess of wheat. Orange zest and a shallow bitterness are balanced by a general spice note and a more poignant clove element. Crisp green apple settles over a thin bready doughiness that drops away soon to a broadly crisp and dry finish. It's maybe not what one would expect of a saison, but the interpretation is a tasty one.

A bit north of light bodied, the ebullient carbonation and crisp character leave a peppy glow in tow.

So, it's not the saison one might expect. It's got a wit-style backbone that raises eyebrows at first, but once I settled in, I found myself liking this quite a bit for what it is. And the crisp, clean essence, combined with a very nice flavor, make this a very quenching, easy drinking creation. Call it what you'd like, no matter, I'll be sure to try it again, because it's good. That's what matters most.

Triumph's saison is orangeish gold in appearance beneath a creamy head of white that drops steadily to a thin surface covering and wide collar. The nose is delicately spicy, fruity, and softly phenolic. They state on the menu that it's similar to a Belgian wit, and it is. It's medium-light in body, and delicately crisp with tiny, effervescent bubbles that tingle the tongue. The flavor offers a maltiness that's a touch wheaty and somewhat straw-like, and threaded through with delicately citrusy (some rind as well) and apple-like fruitiness. The yeast lends some phenolic and spicy notes that round it out and give it depth. Bitterness takes a back seat, as might be expected. It's much more of a witbier-like saison than Saison Dupont, but quenching nonetheless. Well worth trying!
