For over 7 years this barleywine has been on BA... but I am making only the second review.
It gets more mysterious. Enigma was selected for the widely-read "1001 Beers To Taste Before You Die." So, you'd think someone else would have reviewed it. And all this gets more improbable because I only found it because I came to Christchurch.... on the complete opposite side of the planet.
Here is something more interesting: Enigma actually is a pretty good barleywine. My only fault with it is that it claims 85 IBU on the label.... which is quite a bit more than I willingly drink. Enigma has more hops than any English rendition that I've had. But it hides its hops and alcohol well.
Have Enigma if you can find it. Perhaps you can answer these mysteries.
And despite this being one of Christchurch's earlier renditions proving how brewpub's regenerate inner cities (something I like to study), I missed it when there. If you visit, give the brewpub a review. (There has not been one on BA for 8 years !)

Big, rich, sweet toffee aroma with notes of burnt caramel and a fruitiness that rounds it out.
Clear, mahogany colour with very little head.
This beer is intensely sweet with lots of big malt flavour. There is also a touch of vegemite and a hint of vanilla and smoke. Unfortunately it is a touch cloying.
Big and thick with moderately-low carbonation. This is smooth and sticky.
It's a decent English Barleywine but for me it is just a touch too cloying and could do with a hint more attenuation.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
