Copenhagen 27/7 2018. 33 cl bottle from Mikkeller & Friends, Torvehallerne. Drawing of dark flowers on a murky grey-ish background. Stereotype of a Chinese House. Made in collaboration with the Chef for Restaurant Aroii in Copenhagen.

Pours opaque dark brown with small light tan head. Stable. Settles as thin layer of foam. Crawling up the side of the glass. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is intense, spicy and herbal. Anise, licorice, pimenta and cinnamon. Some dark sweet malts, lightly roasted scent rummaging in the background.

Medium carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, lively and tingling texture.

Flavor is fairly intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly stronger bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and spicy. Lingering. Finish is semi-dry.

Not the typical Schwarzbier - apart from the color. A bonanza of spices with a light Christmas feel.

Google translate is my friend. Schwarzbier brewed with pepper, allspice, cinnamon, star anise and cloves.
Pours very dark brown, a few red tinges, one finger tan head with great retention, really lasts.
Doesn't smell extremely Christmas-y, but has that schwarzbier dark malt and caramel. Some faint clove and cinnamon, a bit of minty anise, touch of licorice, but not huge with the added spices.
Taste starts with the mildly roasted malts and some burnt sugar, a nice grainy feel with a touch of nuts, even some faint coffee bean. The dark spices follow, again, as in the smell, not too huge, but giving off licorice, bit of cinnamon, and a bit of freshness from the star anise and juniper berries. Add some green grassy hops (with a faint lemon note too) in the finish, and you get a mild bitterness that leaves some nice flavours in the aftertaste.
Medium body and carbonation. Not too prickly, even with the added pepper.
An interesting, rather wintery schwarzbier, but somehow all the pieces don't really fit perfectly. Worth to give it a try, tho.
