Got this one in Belgium at some shop somewhere
From a bottle into a snifter
Oatmeal stout with coffee and aged in Cherry Wine Barrels
APPEARANCE: Black pour yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy tan head with good retention. Head slowly fades to a full foamy cap and leaves some nice lacing down the glass. Eventually a ring and splotchy wisp remains but leaves no real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Nice creamy coffee, vanilla, some oak, red wine notes and a lightly roasted character as well. Pretty nice and well put together.
TASTE: Cherry oak notes up front, with some red wine and light tartness as well. Some coffee and oak at the swallow with a milder but lingering finish of oak, red wine, sweet cream and some lightly bitter coffee flavors. A bit of tart cherry in the back as well. Plenty interesting but could be a little more forthcoming after the swallow.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Not quite creamy enough, a touch watery, goes down fine and finishes a bit sticky.
OVERALL: This is alright, but falls a touch flat perhaps. A little watery on the palate, and the coffee gets outplayed a bit by the wine barrels. Flavorful and interesting enough, though I’d expect to see more of the base coffee stout come through for top marks. Still, worth checking out if you enjoy wine barrel beers.
