11.2 fl oz. bottle, cap says best by 06/01/2017. Mikkeller collaboration with musician Hamilton Leithauser, "Stout aged in bourbon barrels". Acquired a single bottle from the local bottle shop.
Poured into a Big Eddy snifter.
A - Pours a dark brown-black, nearly opaque in the glass, with some hues of brown showing near the surface. One finger of thick frothy khaki-tan head that leaves lots of good thin spindly lacing behind. Looks pretty decent.
S - A pale, dusty, musty, yeasty aroma, with minor notes of cola and cherry chocolate spice. No decadent notes of chocolate or cream, vanilla, barrel, and/or bourbon to be found. Not according to style, I'll give it the 3 for smell, but that is being generous.
T - Taste is the same - a musty yeasty flavor gives way to a burnt chocolate chip / cherry cola flavor. Burnt, roasty, & dry. Notes of chocolate and charred coffee grounds, but again, no smooth notes of chocolate, vanilla, cream, oak, wood, bourbon, or barrel to be found here. I don't know what this is supposed to be - a Belgian stout? Is that fruit? Cherry? Berries? Hops? I'm not really sure.
M - Medium-full, with too much carbonation. This should be smooth and milky, but it's brisk and crisply carbonated like a club soda.
Overall, a disappointing bourbon barrel aged stout from Mikkeller, this one surely did not deliver the goods. Unique & interesting, to be sure, but not within it's style guidelines, and not terribly easy to drink at all.

Dark brown color with light brown, one finger head. Aroma has dark malts, brown sugar, molasses and a slight vanilla sweetness. Taste starts with chocolate, quite balanced and gets more bitter in the finish. You even get some hops in the aftertaste. Quite good but there is no bourbon.
