my first beer from the new mikkeller facility i think, on tap in san francisco at mikkeller there. its an old ale with maple syrup, and i am really hoping it makes it to bottles because its delicious, good enough to have come from vermont. just as maple forward as it can be, and while it is sweet and caramely, it seems like at least as much residual sugar comes from the maple syrup itself as it does from the grain, a favorable feature for a mikkeller freak like myself. copper in color, fairly thick, airy tan head on top rests lazily, and the aroma of maple (and agave syrup which is in here too) really come right out. it almost has a port wine fruity and fortified aromatic, boozy for sure, and not without some yeast character, loosely english and high gravity. the taste for me is all maple, absolutely love it, hearty dark amber syrup, the good stuff, its wintery and amazing. too strong to drink quickly, but i was fully going crazy here, so in love with the beer that i found myself having finished a glass in just a couple of short minutes. somewhat lighter in body than it could be all things considered, pushed along there by active carbonation. i long wondered if mikkeller would ever do another maple beer after the golden sap was so sensational, and i have been rewarded for my patience. this is as good as any strong ale ive had this year, absolutely not to be missed!
