Collaboration with To Øl
Inspired by the Scandinavian version of a mulled wine, “Gløgg” (pronounced glue-g), we built a simple strong ale base with British malts to create a toasty/biscuit foundation. We sourced Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah grape must from the Napa Valley, and Tart and Dark Cherry Juice from Michigan to provide a deep, warming body that is complex and vinous.
Spiced with a blend of orange peel, clove, cinnamon, and cardamom, we sought traditional fall/winter notes with a bit of intrigue. Finished with almonds, this collaborative project is crazy interesting, and even more comfy. Oh, and it is fermented with a Norwegian farmhouse yeast strain. Cool right?

The can pour is an opaquely, muddled burgundy color and hosts a faint ring of fine white foam.
The aroma is deeply earthy with grape-must up front.
Malt definitely informs the flavor, but cherry, rich vinous aspects and allspice and clove are all present.
This is a very good malt-version of Glogg. I’d this on a cold December night.

A: The beer is clear cherry red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that left large wisps of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of cherries and grape must are present in the nose along with hints of spices such as cinnamon and cardamom.
T: The taste follows the smell and is even more complex with additional hints of orange peel and clove. It seems that the cherry flavors are a little stronger in comparison to those of the grape must.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a lot of complexities of aromas and flavors in both the smell and taste. It is also quite drinkable considering its strength because any traces of alcohol are very well masked from the taste.
