“SAY WHAT?”

“Say What?” That’s what it means.

Årh Hvad?! is Danish for “Say What?” However, when pronounced in proper Danish, it also sounds a lot like the word “Orval”, a Trappist brewery I’m sure you guys have heard of.

Årh Hvad?! is Mikkeller’s interpretation of Orval, one of Mikkel’s favorite beers. The color is a cloudy amber and has a white head. The taste is peppery, malty with a hoppy finish. It is hopped four times with Styrian Goldings hops. The fermentation is done with two yeast strains, one of which is brettanomyces,

Årh Hvad?! is brewed for Mikkeller at De Proef Brouwerij in Belgium.

A thanks to the undisputed champion of canned beer, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16.9 oz. can, which says 7.6 abv on it. Has a hazy bronze color with a 2 inch head despite a gentle pour. Smell is full of fruits, cherries and grapes stand out, a touch funky as well. Taste is full of funk, some cherries, slightly sour, a hint of cherry. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall it's not bad, but it's no Orval.

Poured from 11.2-ounce bottle into a tulip glass. Appearance is a slightly cloudy dark orange, with a generous off-white head that left some pretty lacing as it settled to a thick cap. Aroma is dominated by the funkiness of the brettanomyces, with strong notes of citrus peel and spice. These are present on the palate as well. Medium-light in body, with a very dry finish and some citrus-zest bitterness lingering on the palate. It would be interesting to do a side-by-side tasting of this and Orval to see how Mikkel's interpretation compares.
