Barleywine Aged in Bourbon Barrels. A beer fit for a viking funeral - Øl Nagelfar is a brooding Barleywine, aged for over three years in bourbon barrels. Warm toffee roundness, deep dark fruits, and spicy wood character all come together in concert with a complex oxidation. Not overbearing, a medium body is balanced by tannin and notions of citrus before finishing with a malty fullness.

Pours a deep, very dark brown color with a ruby red tint. Produced a 3/4 finger dark tan soapy head that dissipated quickly.

Aroma is dark fruit forward, bringing notes of boxed raisin, fig, and plum. There's a big tobacco note, as well as caramel, molasses, some brown sugar, and a slight nuttiness. The extended aging in barrels brings charred oak, bourbon, and some slight vanillin.

Taste follows the nose quite well, with an amplified sweetness and barrel character. Significant boxed raisin, fig, juicy plum, tobacco, nuttiness, brown bread, bruleed brown sugar, caramel, some toffee, charred oak, smooth bourbon, vanillin. Reminiscent of bread pudding with a dash of bourbon in it. The age in the bottle on this has done it very well, as you get the 3 years of saturated bourbon barrel character without the hot booziness.

Light medium to medium body. The extended aging has thinned this one out a bit, which is expected. Slick, sticky, oily.

This is a treat to drink. The base barleywine flavors are on point and the extended aging in bourbon barrels adds a depth of complexity and complements the base extremely well. The barrel character is absolutely on point and the age in the bottle allows it to show off without too much booziness at all. Barleywine is life.

Pours into an impy nonic a deep tawny brown....Very deep, with a half finger light beige head atop.Bourbon, vanilla, and roasted nuts stick out most in the nose, there is a faint resiny hop note that comes into play as it sits a little.A smooth feel,it glides down pretty easy. Not crazy sweet on the palate, cakey with drunken dark fruits that gets hit with a decent drying resiny finish. The hops keep it from getting too in your face sweet.....Like an American Barleywine, great stuff.

oured a deep, reddish brown, with a silky, off white head. Totally opaque in the glass. We’re off to a great start.

Aromas are classic barleywine, with tons of toffee, boxed raisins, black cherries, oaky coconut, with the slightest hint of smoky meat.

Flavors start out similar to the nose, with huge flavors of fruit cake, bourbon-soaked black cherries and toffee. Not too sweet at all. On the finish, there is a dry, charred note. Like sugar that’s been burned on the top of a creme brûlée. Could be a super charred barrel, which wouldn’t surprise me since it sat in one for 3 years. Very well balanced.

Mouthfeel is silky smooth, with absolutely no alcohol burn. I’m not going to say you don’t feel the nearly 12% alcohol, but it’s very easy to drink.
