Drank from a 1 pt 0.9 fl oz (500 ml) bottle purchased at Craft Beer Cellar, Belmont, MA
2021
Served in a snifter
The beer poured a fuller bodied, burnt umber hue. Surprisingly dark for the style. The liquid was topped by a small, frothy, khaki colored crown that transformed into a thick, lasting collar. There was no visible lacing.
The aroma was fantastic. Really rich and robust. Caramel malts came through strong. Loads of sweet toffee as well. Touch of smoke. Boozy bourbon notes were also quite prominent. There was a big vanilla presence too. Subtle dark fruit notes were also detectable.
The flavor was somewhat rough around the edges initially but became smoother with time. Roasty and robust up front. Slightly acrid and bitter. Touch of burnt caramel too. Boozy notes kicked in next. There was a dry nutty quality in the center. More acrid roast and bitterness on the back end and the finish. As the beer warmed, the roastiness mellowed and sweet caramel and toffee notes came forth. Hint of vanilla as well.
The mouthfeel was surprisingly light for the style. Creamy and smooth on the palate. The liquid contained a fine, greater-than-average effervescence that fluffed up nicely.
BA Ol Nagelfar is a solid beer, but it is definitely on the roastier side for the style and not totally my thing. While enjoyable, given the price point, I doubt I would purchase it again.
