Pours a hazy, copper color. 1/5 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and good lacing. Smells of lemongrass, sweet malt, slight pale malt, slight hops, hint of yeast, and a hint of earthiness. Fits the style of an Herbed / Spiced Beer. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of lemongrass, sweet malt, pale malt, slight yeast, and a hint of hops. Overall, weak appearance, decent aroma, decent body, nothing outstanding.

A: Copper orange with a slight haze, almost no carbonation, and a finger of orange cream head.

S: Lemongrass, bergamot, orange citrus quality, malty toffee caramel notes, orange sauce like you get at Asian buffets in North America.

T: Orange, ginger, bergamot, light crème brule, perhaps a hint of lemongrass but more clearly kaffir lime leaves to me, any coriander is muted.

M: Medium light body, little carbonation. Smooth, balance of sweet and dry qualities.

O: These flavor qualities, lemongrass and coriander, are similar to many hop and yeast flavor profiles, like west coast hops and German Heffeweisen yeasts, so much so that the beer could be an American amber ale. In fact it reminds me of the Red Seal Ale by North Coast. Bought this in Chiang Mai, Thailand from Wishbeer in Bangkok. Drinking Nov 5th, 2014.

"Dim Sum bEER." "Brewed especially for asian [sic] food by Mikkeller with Lemongrass & Coriander." 33cl brown glass bottle with appealing red and white label and an unbranded red pry-off pressure cap acquired at a bottle shop in Krakow and served into a pilsner glass in me friend's gaff in Wroclaw. Reiewed live. Cost was 12 zloty. 5.0% ABV. The label doesn't note where Mikkel brewed this; I'm assuming De Proef?

Served at fridge temp. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No style is specified on the label, but given the lemongrass and coriander I'm asserting this is a witbier, and reviewing as such.

Gushes massively upon opening, spilling beer everywhere.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

AROMA: As soon as it's poured, I can smell the strong aroma of sweet caramalt, bubblegum, and cotton candy. It's overwhelming and can be sensed across the room.

Bringing the glass to my nose, I pick up on some soapy hop character (indicative that this spent too long in primary), cream, and a hint of grapefruity citrus zest.

It's inoffensive, but not particularly pleasant or appealing.

No yeasty notes, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

HEAD: Pours a four finger wide head which quickly recedes to two fingers width within 30 seconds. It holds up thereafter for an additional 4-5 minutes. Ample messy spotty soapy lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head chaotically recedes. Something is definitely off in terms of carbonation. The head appears thin and soapy, and isn't very appealing.

BODY: Dark copper with amber hues. Deep and translucent, but nontransparent. It's clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

It's far from unique or special, and seems to have serious carbonation problems. I'm not looking forward to trying it, though Mikkel my favourite brewer may be.

Based on the aroma and appearance, it's obvious this is definitely not a witbier. Reviewing outside of style conventions; my best guess is that it's an American Pale Ale, but who knows? I guess "herbed beer" is appropriate, but it seems inexact.

TASTE: Honestly, I'm not finding the coriander at all. I do pick up on the faint lemongrass, but I doubt I'd ever find it if I tried this blind because it gets clobbered down by the dominant pale malts and floral hop notes. This is overly heavy on the caramalt. I also pick up on some bread crust on the fringe.

It's definitely too sweet. Too malty, with too little hop presence to balance the sweetness.

No yeast character, overt alcohol, or off-notes come through.

I can't say I like it per se, and it's certainly imbalanced. I'm not seeing how this would pair well with dim sum; maybe this was one of Mikkel's mail-in recipe brews based on some zany idea he got while travelling through China.

It's quite shallow, and has a poor amplitude of flavour. Not too cohesive, and certainly not gestalt. Average duration and intensity of flavour.

Not a complex/intricate or subtly built brew, and not a particularly enjoyable one either.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, unnecessarily full-bodied, slightly overcarbonated, and unrefreshing. It's got way too much heft and presence on the palate considering the lack of flavour. Has a subpar overall presence on the palate. This texture doesn't really work in tandem with the taste to elevate the beer to anything special.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, rough, astringent, harsh, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Not one of Mikkel's best. I don't even know that the premise for the beer is a good one, and the execution is quite underwhelming. I definitely wouldn't get this again, and it's not all that drinkable given the disappointing lack of quality. It doesn't even commit to the ingredients it's advertised as being brewed with.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a yellowish color and a hazy consistency. There was an inch of foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A fair aroma of malt (a lot of malt), and hints of lemongrass.

T: Like the aroma, the flavor seemed to me to be dominated by the malt. Yes, there were traces of the lemongrass, but the malt was almost overpowering. Seemed more like a lager than anything else. Very one-dimensional.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a lively finish. Light-bodied.

O: Aside from an excellent mouthfeel, Dim Sum is a pretty forgettable beer. Mikkeller is certainly capable of better.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a clear golden-orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, grass, lemongrass, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet grass and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with interesting aromas and flavors.

Poured from the bottle a fairly deep orange color with three fingers of off-white head. Some sticky lacing left behind.

Aroma of ripe fruit, coriander and sweet caramel malt notes.

Light pilsner notes in the taste with coriander and sweet malts.

Medium bodied and crisp with moderate carbonation.

Not bad. Had a maltier presence than many pilsners. Maybe not as fresh of a bottle as hoped.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 20/11/13

A hazy dark amber, some tiny particles being moved around by a few streams of tiny bubbles, thumbs width of cream colored foam leaves two thick rings followed by some random patches

S lots of lemongrass, not much coriander but random spice I can't place, some lemon peel and pineapple juice with a little caramel and iced tea

T more spice then the nose, less lemon grass and some herbal tea bag, I almost want to heat this up before I drink it, its strange but it works

M medium bodied, almost foamy, slick after the fact with lots of lemongrass and spice lingering

O something different and that always counts for something, not something I have much interest in buying again but its worth a shot

I could see this going well with many Asian dishes and I suppose that was their plan, a 21A perhaps?
