not as ambitious a brew as we often associate with mikkeller, which was true with a number of their london brewpub offerings, but this is a real well done and classically styled nitro dry stout, dark and bone dry, roasty and creamy feeling, bitter and fast finishing, with very little middle malt richness, not too much body for what it is, and a cleanness that is almost shocking for its darkness, really easy drinker, a four season stout, and executed to a high level of proficiency. chalkboard black on the pour with a nice looking nitro cream head in tan, permanent and lacy as it drinks. the nose is a lot of bitter roast, some dark chocolate, and fresh ground espresso beans. the flavor follows but with a little something from the yeast, an english type breadiness and maybe a doughy proofing wetness to it, nice with all the dark malts, softening the whole thing some, and this has an almost oak aged mellowness with the beautiful nitrogenation. not overly complex or anything, just satisfying, traditional, and drinkable. sometimes less can be more, and i was real pleased with the minimal nature and high quality execution of this. good times at mikkellers spots in london! real solid hangover cure right here...
