canned in june 2021, a long time to keep a canned beer around, a generous gift via beer mail from one of my dearest friends, what a treat! ive long lamented the closing of the mikkeller location in san diego, which is where this was done, that place was churning out some literally absurdly awesome beers, and i miss it, cant be too many more like this laying around in cellars or wherever, the moment was not lost on me. remarkable how well this has held up, i wonder if it was anywhere near this funky and complex on the fermentation side when it was newer, i think maybe just because of what it is, foeder beer, saison base, but this is bretty and tart now in a real cohesive and complex way, almost lambic-esque, just magic in aroma and flavor. its lively from the can, a frothed up inch of white head in a white wine glass on top of light orange hazy beer with big soda sized bubbles, obviously well charged from its extended time in the can. aroma and flavor of fresh passion fruit, cannot believe how authentic and forward it still is, not a trace of oxidation here at all, lemony and tropical and tart and so real. i am less familiar with dragon fruit, but i think its more visually striking than it is in the flavor, to me this is about the passion not the dragon, which is totally fine. the yeast is what makes it though, so bretty and wild, not overly bacterial but tangy past the passion fruit, and with an appreciable malt profile still in place, time has been kind indeed here. white wine character as it warms, sauvignon blanc specifically maybe, a little white floral almost clover character, dry as a bone even with the malt in here, insanely effervescent, dancing on the palate. the passion fruit is epic and so is the ferment, i would love to try some of the other editions of this that came out, but thinking at this point its a pipe dream. so thankful to have people in my life willing to share beer like this, really a special treat. such a bummer mikkeller isnt making beer anywhere in the states anymore, i dont think people fully realized how good they were at their best, and this is more evidence of that. elite stuff, even as a dinosaur now...
